“Ako lang ang walang pangalan”
“Ako lang ang walang pangalan” says Dante Mendoza.

If there is an award in Barrio Siete, the 1st Barrio Siete Award of Excellence goes to Filipino filmmaker Brillante “Dante” Mendoza who was proclaimed best director in this year’s Cannes Film Festival in France for his work “Kinatay” (Butchered), besting the likes of acclaimed directors Ang Lee, Pedro Almodovar, Jane Campion and Quentin Tarantino.
Critics called Kinatay, the film “unwatchable” but others admitted that while they cringed at the film’s blunt realism on violence, they could not look away.
Brillante Medoza exemplifies what’s it like to be in Barrio Siete, overcome challenges and come out on top. On top of the world pa kamo! He pulled a tremendous upset victory to such names as Tarantino, Campion and Von Trier. He won over established filmmakers, including Michael Haneke, whose “The White Ribbbon” won the Palme d’Or, French master Alain Resnais, Oscar winner Ang Lee, Ken Loach, Gasper Noe and Johnnie To.
As the first Filipino to win the Best Director prize in Cannes, he now joins the list of revered filmmakers who have won the coveted prize, including Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman, Francois Truffaut, Luis Buñuel, Robert Bresson, Costa Gavras, Bernard Tavernier, Werner Herzog, Robert Altman, Joel Coen, Pedro Almodovar and Gus Van Sant.
Ngayon, me pangalan ka na, Brillante “Dante” Mendoza. Congratulations!

Galing ni Direk Dante, mapahanay lang sa mga de-kalibreng director abroad is already an honor. Binigyan na ba siya sa Palasyo ng recognition. He, too deserves public recognition just like the other Pinoys who made it to the international scene.
Im interested to see this flick. Bring on Kinatay peeps!
Silver, ako din gusto ko siya panoorin. too bad hindi yata ipapalabas sa mga sinehan dahil sobrang violent. Sana meron ng kopya suki namin sa Tandang Sora, hehe.

Sana merong special screening for that. Sayang naman kung di mapanuod dito.
Dont forget the chicha and the sopdrinks! Oye!
