My 12th State of the Barrio Address (SOBA) addresses Roni’s comment here na personally, medyo nairita ako! Hahaha! Ano ba Roni?! Leche ka! Grrr!

Laos ka na ba Reynz?

Para bang it smacks of sumtin’ sumtin’ na hindi maganda pakinggan. But it’s ok. Ganyan lang yan si Roni, who abruptly left Barrio with his internal fight with a number of B7 writers. Sabi nga ni bluep, matira ang matibay.

Laos ka na ba Reynz?

I don’t know if it’s a challenge for the Barrio. But, it’s kinda loaded and a cockeyed statement but on the other hand, thanks to Roni, it sort of touches on an aspect in collective blogging, the negative side of it.

There’s a slew of reasons why bloggers join a collective blog. Exposure, support, friendship, one with the concept, not one with the concept and just being radical, be popular, social climb, push an agenda, prove something, to be heard, make money or whatever it is, for some, just the passion to write… about anything for nothing or for something.

But one can never discount the fact that some join because the blogger has a following. But that “following” has to always be fed, else everything becomes ephemeral. But in the process you could have touched some nerves, changed your vision, or they’ve become alienated. Alienated with you, your writers, our entries and to even our readers. Or just plain busy and done with it.

And one of the inherent problems once you blog and is focused to “them“, whoever is that particular audience is just that. You must be consistent in what they expect from you and quite possibly offer something more exciting. So would blogging focused on just you personally be the right formula? Yes, only up to a certain point that readers find you interesting. The law of diminishing returns certainly is applicable in blogging. And as I said, everything else becomes temporary. You’d have to be a member of Cirque de soleil and hope to find that magical right balance in blogging for unless you offer value to them for free, they won’t come, which to me, is the bottom line. But how do I know? No idea. Probably simple metrics like Alexa will do.

So, let’s take a look!

Our starting line is our 20 millionth rank when we started 5 and 1/2 months ago. And our traffic rank? We’re not yet in the top 100,000 but take a look at our performance – we are hovering right around 128,000? And this in all of 5 and 1/2 months?

alexa rank barrio 11 1

I love to compare our site with kaVilang Varrio. After all, well… I won’t tell you. The stories are in Reyna Elena’s magic box. And if you look at their reach? They’re doing pretty badly. And I noticed, it was consistent.

alexa rank barrio 11 2

It’s even worse if you look at their pageview. Whereas B7 maintained its consistency for the last three months.

alexa rank barrio 11 3

To prove, if you look at the bounce rate, people who visits kaVilang Varrio exits as fast as they could once they land there. Not in the barrio.

alexa rank barrio 11 4

In fact, the more they stay in Barrio Siete with an increasing stay of an average 10% for the last three months.

alexa rank barrio 11 5

So where do those visitors be coming from if they’re not from search engines and no one is searching for Barrio Siete? Networking site perhaps? and regular readers? It seemed like “Keep social climbing alive!” worked.

alexa rank barrio 11 6

And so, that’s the story in Barrio Siete. From 20 millionth rank 5 and 1/2 months ago…

Alexa_a1

To this magic number – 181,224.

alexa rank barrio 11 7

Have we reached the top? I don’t know. Did we lose our umpht?! No clue either. Laos na ba ako? ~waaa!!! But then, that’s under the presumption that I was and now a-has been. ~waaaaa! And will Barrio Siete be able to still move that number past that? Madam Auring is busy but let’s see what happens next. So far, it’s been strong.

And so, as I look back at Roni’s question, “Laos ka na ba Reynz?” Damn shit! I hate it when people put me on a defensive! But the numbers are telling me otherwise!

And 5 & 1/2 months is not enough to judge me or us nor Barrio Siete’s success although our rankings will tell you that we’ve overtaken quite a number of self-described influential bloggers in Manila. Let me repeat – in all of 5 and 1/2 months. Indeed, this experimental collective blogging will continue, I hope. For now, our mission is still social climbing, what we write are imbalanced and our views are biased.

What do we plan to do when we grow up? We still don’t know. But I could tell all of you that it’s not a joke putting together a collective blog let alone managing a very diverse opinion and personalities. Your social climbing skills will always be put to a critical test.

But I believe in what Rob believes. And I refuse to control Barrio Siete Writers. That’s not the essence of a blog. They come. They go. They write. They leave. When blogging becomes a chore, trust me, you will be sore. And if they left because laos na si Reyna, I have no regrets because my presence in the blogging world is not dictated by UFO’s. Just like what Chiz Escudero said: “It’s just me.”

Like most of Barrio Siete Writers, I blog because I love to write but that does not make me a journalist, a writer or a blog promoter. For as long as I can pay my webhost, I will blog. If not, I’ll just keep a notebook. And if I become famous? boy! that would be one great bonus!

Taking blogging to the next level is not that easy Reynz. Heck, more with a collective blog. Passion drives a community and with Barrio’s young age, the right formula hasn’t been mixed yet. It will come, don’t worry.

How should we take social climbing to the next level? What benefit would that give to our readers? Will they care if we care?

Let me share you this. Competition is like a race but competitors are not external entities. The only competitor we have in our race is with ourselves. No once runs a race looking sidewards right?

So, let’s look at finding the right formula by looking forward.

  • Abby says:

dear reyna elena, barrio siete is the first site i always go to whenever i browse the net. and to tell you the truth – i am not very easy to please in terms of the things that i read..mabuhay ang barrio siete writers – no pretentions, just social climbers ;)

  • Mel says:

honestly, napansin ko nga (well obvious naman talaga) that some of us has lost fire. biglang lumamig. pati ako natatagalan na rin kung mag update and i apologise.

  • Isa Lang Ang Reyna!

    Hindi si Gloria

    Hindi Si Imelda!

    Hindi Si Loren!

    Sino Pa Ba????

    The One And Only

    Reyna Elena!!!

    Long Live The Queen!

  • malensky says:

‘day i have a proposal…ano kaya kung every contribution eh bayaran mo ng tig-10$??? HAHHAHAHA

  • Monique says:

Ayos to, collective ideas pano itaas ang rankings. Maybe inabot din ng busy life with work, personal life, blah blah blah… Pero yeah, natats ako dun sa last entry about blogging. :)

And maybe people are also busy rebuilding their lives, esp with the devastation ni Ondoy, at kung sino sino pa!

    Great job Barrio Siete!

    • reynz says:

i would think that way too monique dahil the numbers are telling otherwise, consistent pa rin ang taas nya, taz ang regular readers are still around and mostly lurkers. nasanay na kasi si roni sa sangkatutak na comments hehhe

  • Monique says:

By the way, okay din yung 10$ hihihi….

  • Silver says:

I dont think this is something like laos.

    • reynz says:

i might agree silver kasi gaya nga nung sabi ko monique, yong alexa chart is showing consistency so far at pataas pa sya kahit na medyo naging busy ang mga writers, andito lang ang kapitana sa barrio hall haha

    • Snow says:

Same here.

Honest yan…

  • Rosa says:

I don’t think so. The blogs are still very relevant and interesting Reynz. I just lurk now since I am just over the swine flu which I would not wish it on anyone. Keep it up B7 writers!!!

  • dencios says:

  • roni says:

“medyo nairita ako! Hahaha! Ano ba Roni?! Leche ka! Grrr!

lol! nagtatanong lang naman, to naman uh, pagkatapos ko kasing makita yung b7 linking to ondoy, jump ako dito only to find na parang natutuyo na ata ang sapa sa barrio.

    kudos to all!

  • jemm says:

just carry on mahal na reyna!
i love reading the blogs here! am not a ka-barrio, not an active comment-giver, pero ok na ako na nakikibasa lang. wag naman pong payperview pls???
it lightens me up amidst a busy routine pag nadadalaw ko ang barrio niyo!
    go lang ng go!

  • annie says:

  • cora says:

Laos? What is the basis? This comment is good for it keeps the B7 writers on their toes, on the other hand depende siguro kung kanino nanggaling. I don’t know Ron from Eve —but yung claim na “Laos”, I don’t subscribe to it, siguro nagkaroon lang ng “lull” moment. If you look at it readers still flock to the site and these are not “pretentious” readers na pa-intellectual, most of them have something between their ears.

  • roni says:
