5 Myths and Hoaxes in Philippine History

7 June 2009 106 Comments

Most of us will remember these topics were seen in the old historical books that landed in our laps when we were still students in our tender and younger years. *Nostalgia mode*

But these topics that appeared as facts years ago and being repetitively embedded on our brains by our dear teachers are now being debunked and reduced to myths and kwentong bayan. There is even one that resulted as a historical controversy during the Marcos regime.

With no further ado, let’s hear the 5 hoaxes and myths in Philippine history.

1. Princessa Urduja

When I read about Princess Urduja in my elementary history books, she is as prevalent as a known historical fact. But mind you, history is a study that needs archives of supporting documents and evidences in order to declare something as a historical fact.

I thought Princess Urduja is someone that can be revered into our native version of Joan of Arc. Princess Urduja is a warrior princess who resided in Pangasinan in early 14th century. The only account that we have of Princess Urduja came from Ibn Batuta’s diary – he made an entry about this gal, stating that he visited the kingdom of Princess Urduja named Tawalisi in Pangasinan while on his way to Canton, China. Ibn Batuta (a Muslim traveller that time) described Urduja as a warrior female who spearheaded her troops to battle. She is also known (daw) to have proved herself in battles. O di ba mala-Joan of Arc daw. :D

But what made Urduja to be declared as a myth is the lack of evidence. I havent heard either of any archaeological evidence that points into the existence of Urduja and her Tawalisi kingdom in Pangasinan. Another twist in this Urduja story is that some modern scholars dont think that Urduja is a Filipina – she might be a Cambodian.

2. The Kalantiaw Code

The Kalantiaw Code is another mythical native law that bears some similarities or parallels to the Code of Hammurabi of ancient Babylon. You know, the old saying, “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”? That’s it folks. Haha. There are a lot of stories surrounding the mythical code. Some stories tell that Kalantiaw Code prescribes uberly violent punishments to the pasaways like paglublob ng kamay sa kumukulong tubig sa kawa at pagtali sa puno ng niyog sabay pagapangan ng hantik. That is a big ouch for the criminals, animales and pasaways of that time. Ouch.

It is said that the code was written by a certain Datu Kalantiaw in 1433. He was the datu of Negros. The code is later mentioned in a historical fiction, “The Ancient Legends of the Island of Negros” (Las Antiguas de Leyendes de la Isla de Negros) by Jose E. Marco in 1913.

Again, the lack of evidence – supporting documents and archaelogical finds have blasted Kalantiaw Code to become a myth rather than a historical fact.

3. The 10 Bornean Datus

This is another long-standing legend regarding our roots – the 10 Bornean Datus who fled the kingdom of the tyrannical Datu Makatunaw. Sounds like grandeur and epic noh? But sorry, its also a declared hoax. Why? It is because of the irregularities and lack of supporting evidence for this. And maybe we need a collaborative study with Malaysia para lang mapatunayan ito.

The 10 Bornean Datus are the following: Datu Puti, Datu Sumakwel, Datu Bangkaya, Datu Paiborong, Datu Padohinog, Datu Domongsol, Datu Libay, Datu Dumangsil, Datu Dumalogdog at Datu Balensuela. I remembered way back in my student days na ang hirap nilang ienumerate minsan sa exam. Haha.

A famous story about them is their meetup with the Aeta chieftain, Marikudo and of course, the golden salakot which was given to him in exchange for the land for the new settlers and the Aeta’s retreat to the forests.

4. The Code of Maragtas

This is another legendary code that was associated with the 10 Bornean datus. It was previously believed that the document was made between 1200 to 1500. It was even recognized previously by historians. In a further examination by William Henry Scott, a well known historian, he found out that the so-called original book of Maragtas is just a creation of a certain Guillermo Santiago-Cuino who also based it from the book about Visayan local legends compiled in 1938 by Pedro Monteclaro.

5. Tasaday

I remembered seeing the word “Tasaday” in my 4th grade HEKASI subject. During those times, the Tasadays are being celebrated as an ethnic group / Stone Age people that lived in isolation in the jungles of Mindanao. Of course, anthropologists and historians scrambled their way to meet these folks. It was later found out that the stone age repartee (see photo above) was just a hoax by Manuel Elizalde who pressured certain members of local tribes there to appear as Stone Age people in exchange for food and cigars.

Further studies have been conducted to shed light into this Tasaday controversy. They attempted to find the real deal Tasaday. Studies have shown that Tasaday is a small indigenous tribe in Mindanao but they arent the Stone Age tribe that people have hoped for. They maybe primitive but not Stone Age.

Moral lesson of the Tasaday controversy? There are people who are trying to take advantage of other people para lang sumikat at kumita. Hmpt.

So peeps, do you know any controversial topic or hoax in Philippine history? Feel free to fire away your comments in the threads below. :)

  • The Cat says:

    Silver,

all the while my mother-in-law was asking me several questions about the Philippines.

So in the eyes of the western brothers, we were barbarians who need to be evangelized and taught the civilized manner of living.

    just my thoughts.

    • Silver says:

      Ms. Cat,

That’s a nice sharing from you. Interesting to know how the Americans have made a propaganda to make Philippines look like a savage land from the far east.

There is plenty of work to discover about our pre-colonial roots. I believe there are a lot of stories out there waiting to be told, as I have mentioned in my post, maybe we need a collaborative study with our Asian neighbors like Malaysia in order to establish our pre-colonial history and shed light to those myths (if they are indeed myths or a part of an oral tradition lost a long time ago)

      • The Cat says:

it is also interesting to note that there were many hoaxes during marcos regime.

there was the hoax about a miracle about two girls who claimed that the Blessed Virgin appeared to them in an island in the South. ang sabi ng mga sumulat na nag-iimbestiga ay isang pamamaraan para

      • Silver says:

I havent heard that one Ms. Cat. Haha.

Pero its interesting to note that parang hibang ata si Imelda. Hahha.

In my own little, barriotic thinking (haha) the myths that I have mentioned here in my post, can be a start to investigate our roots again. Never mind the hoaxes. Haha.

You know, I hope someone will start investigating these kinds of myths and let’s see if its the real deal or what.

      • darbs says:

        2. ang medalya ni Marcos

Hero Medalyones ba? Beyond the call of duty medallions? Purple Hearts na medalyon?

May isang clan na niniwalang it was true. Hailed as the real hero in second world war laban sa mga hapon.

        Confirmation:
I saw the Ferdie Movie: Ang Hero na Gerilya sa Second World War (not the title) gamit projector doon sa aming Barrio Hall around 70′s.

      • Silver says:

        Darbs,

Ang napanuod ko lang about Marcos is “A Dangerous Life”. It’s all about the end of Marcos Regime at Edsa 1.

      • cora says:

“I have mentioned in my post, maybe we need a collaborative study with our Asian neighbors like Malaysia in order to establish our pre-colonial history and shed light to those myths (if they are indeed myths or a part of an oral tradition lost a long time ago)…”

I agree to this…I have met some Dutch historians when I was in Sumatra (Indonesia)and they explained that the North part of the Philippines should have similar culture as the Batacs from Sumatra Island and the South should have similar as the people from Java Island. Surprisingly, the Batac pepole of Sumatra have very similar culture and traditions as the Ilocanos and the Mt.Province People. Di sila pakapaniwala when I told them that we have a town called “Batac” in the Philippines and their “dialects” have the same etymology.

Baka namam kasi tutuong meron talagang 10 Datu o di kaya “land bridges”.

      • Silver says:

        Cora,

Napansin ko ang some sort of similarities ng salitang bahasa at ng bisaya. They do sound alike di ba?

Its nice to know the information about Batac. I hope our history folks will delve deeper into these kind of connections.

Yung Balanggiga Massacre e as far as I know e totoo yun. As a revenge, the Americans seized the three golden bells of Balanggiga.

Sina Eugenio Daza (a barrio captain) and a certain Adronico Balais ang mga namuno sa labanan dun.

    • BURAOT says:

ms. cat, actually nothing has changed. they still use wrong information cum intelligence to justify occupation of other smaller nations.

  • The Cat says:

Ang nagdispute ng kay urduja at maragtas code ay si william henry scott. dissertation niya ay yong kalantiaw code. he traced the origin to be from a book of legends written by a filipino.

mostly the legends or kuwentong bayan or kantahing bayan were handed from generations to generations thru word of mouth until someone compiles them into a book.

it does not necessarily mean that all of them were fictions. some of them are true but with the passage of time, the story is expanded that it appears more of a legend than the truth.

they’re looking for evidences, archeological evidence because Ibn Batuta who wrote the epic of princess urduja was suspected to have made up the story.

in truth, the writer wrote the story out of his memories cause he never wrote his experiences while travelling.

I am thinking, if he had not met this certain lady, why would he make it up? for what purpose?

There was a statement that as a muslim, he was surprise to see women behaving not-muslim like.

so princess urduja who embodied a liberated woman was not a muslim and it caught his attention.

    about evidences?

it takes centuries to find archaelogical evidences. And they could never be found in the Philippines.

there had been many excavators who found various archaelogical finds which never were brought to the Phil. government because they command high prices in the blackmarket of world relics. They may be housed now in the private collectibles of rich people whose vice is to hoard tings of historical value.

the only chance that it would go to museum is when their estate donate them to one.

sa pilipinas walang masyadong museum. sa US marami. napanood ba ninyo ang a night at the museum ni ben stiller.

    • Silver says:

Hahah.

      • The Cat says:

      • Silver says:

        Meron yung kakutsaba ms. cat.

Basta usapang pera at corruption, meron at meron yan. Hahahaha…

    • BURAOT says:

yup. i agree, it is very hard to find archaeological evidence anywhere in the Philippines. lack of funding is one reason, the second being mas interesado pa ang marami sa Yamashita treasure hunting kesa sa cultural heritage.

    • roni says:

considering other christian historians nung panahon, galit sila sa mga muslim kaya they tend to not tell the truth and record them, na binasehan naman ng ating present na kaalaman.

      • Silver says:

  • The Cat says:

sa susunod sigurong article ko about lamyarda ay ipopost ko ang mga pics to show how US preserves their history.

  • The Cat says:

  • The Cat says:

I havent heard that one Ms. Cat. Haha.

marami akong biniling libro noon to find out more about the martial law days.

alal mo bang noong nagearthquake daw sa ruby towers doon sa binondo, i am not sure of the year, may taong nakatagpo ng pera at isinuli ang perang ito.

    • Snow says:

I remember that Ruby Tower Ms. Cat, madalas ikuwento yan ng Mom ko. Hmmm, I agree with you na campaign yan ni Imelda para ma-divert ang utak ng tao. :(

    • silver says:

      Weird yan Ms. Cat.

Ang mga naririnig kong kwento about the Ruby Towers chuva etc. e naririnig ko na lang sa tatay at nanay ko.

Talagang hibang si Imelda noon ah. Hahaha.

  • reynz says:

I remember this! I remember this! Di ba si Elizalde ba yon? Who was even featured on Time Magazine???

    • silver says:

Yeap. Manuel Elizalde for the Tasaday. Ginamet nya yung mga local tribesman sa Mindanao para mega-appear sa the Stone Age Tasaday people.

  • reynz says:

Moral lesson of the Tasaday controversy? There are people who are trying to take advantage of other people para lang sumikat at kumita. Hmpt.

I know this one. There are bloggers who would hit Reyna Elena or Barrio Siete para lang tumaas ang trapik nila.

I learned my lesson. Kk nilang blue!

  • reynz says:

    BALIK AKO LATER!

I have to do my regular beautification routine sa kalsada at sa gym hehe me nakita kasi akong dumaang gwapo hehehe i want to be the cutest bicol aborigines ever hahaha

  • darbs says:

Ang Tasaday Controversy ay example ng well – known na adage “small knowledge is dangerous”

Hello! How can anybody create a civilization kung since memorial andyan na po ang ANTHROPOLOGY!

    Only in the Pilipins.

Yun, dry run na sila. very convincing! yeeeh, sabi pa.

    NABUKING!

Hindi na pinag-uusapan pa until today.

    • Silver says:

      Darbs,

      • Silver says:

        Bwahahah….

        Buraot,

Kaya asar ako sa nagpasimuno ng Tasaday chorva na yan kasi maliwanag na gaining profit through exploiting other people ang gusto nun.

      • darbs says:

        1990′s nung lumuwas akong maynila

    • roni says:

I don’t know if this one is relevant: I worked with a group of people na mga traders dito sa riyadh. There’s this one document stating that there’s about 1 ton of gold sa switzerland na binebenta ng isang pinoy, naka adress sa batac.

      • Silver says:

        Batac?

        Di kaya Marcos gold yun???

        Hmmmm ~kamot ulo~

      • darbs says:

There’s this one document stating that there’s about 1 ton of gold sa switzerland na binebenta ng isang pinoy, naka adress sa batac.

    • Silver says:

Kalantiaw is a native, mythical law. Pwede pa naman magconduct ng research or studies about it. We might be needing a collaborative study or research with our fellows from Malaysia, Indonesia etc.

      • dencios says:

      • Silver says:

Yeap. Plus yung lack of government support. You need the proper manpower at big bucks para makapag-launch ng excavation or expedition.

Not to mention pa e yung mga tomb raiders. Hehe.

      • dencios says:

        Bwahahahha….ikaw talaga dencios. Haha. :D

Ako noon dati, nagtankang pumasok sa UP Diliman to take up AB Anthropology. Ugh.

      • Silver says:

        Dencios,

Nakalimutan kong i-mention si F. Landa Jocano. He’s an anthropologist din at madalas kong makita ang name nya sa mga school textbooks ko dati.

      • dencios says:

    • dencios says:

i remember Jocano during college kasi hirap humanap ng used book nya sa recto na mura. haha. oo nga, naalala ko. hehe. kasi that time nasuklian pa ako ng punit na bente pesos then nakita ko sa bahay na lang, walang hiyang tindero yun. haha. i think may napublished din ata sya about barrio life, basta di ko sure pero tungkol sa pinoy values sa barrio..

      • Silver says:

The other one was H.Otley Beyer.

  • darbs says:

    1. Princessa Urduja

I never heard about Princess Urduja from Pangasinan but I heard about Biag-ni-Lam-ang sa publication, parang “Philipine Teachers’ Journal” not sure about the name. anybody?

    • Silver says:

      Darbs,

Biag-ni-Lam-ang is an Ilokano epic.

      • darbs says:

Biag-ni-Lam-ang is an Ilokano Epic – - a Filipino version of Hercules. cool!

        Thanks.

  • darbs says:

    Darbs,

Ang napanuod ko lang about Marcos is “A Dangerous Life”. It’s all about the end of Marcos Regime at Edsa 1.

American Public Broadcasting Corporation na funded through donations. here is the link.
    http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/imelda/film.html

Pero if the Gerilyang Marcos Movie was not a myth; if the movie existed then… baka naka archive lang sa may tabi-tabi or totally destroyed. dahil… i don’t know. hindi magamit sa eleksyon? Oh, well…

    Filipino Culture:
Story Telling is our past time. Tama ba? Personally, I was sorrounded by story tellers.

    Author, Edgar Alan Poe. sister.

    Edgar Alan Poe?

I proudly responded sa cute sister YES, Sister, Edgar Allan Poe.

Series pala ang tawag nun. just like J.K.Rowling’s Harry Potter.

I was overwhelmed doon sa kay dami daming words…

Sabi ko pa sa sarili ko, how on earth did he (kapitbahay na story teller – Sto. Thomas/Claritian seminarian/ at that time) tell the story so easy as if it was Liwayway or Wakasan or Tagalog Komiks or Pilipino Komiks.. para bang sya si “Hal Santiago”.

    Saved by the librarian:
Sabi pa nung librarian. Wala syang amoy, pabango. Pero amoy sabong…hmnnnn. CAMAY? I did not ask baka sabihing “you baboy!” este “pervert!”

Sabi pa ni sister librarian, read this Shakespearean Comics.

Yung Tasaday story, i think matagal nang declared as hoax, although back in the early 90′s nasa textbook pa rin yan ng HEKASI sa elematary (public schools).

  • mel beckham says:

Omg, those ‘historical facts’ are etchos lang pala? Ang alam ko lang ay yung about those Tasadays na choreographed by Elizalde.

    • Silver says:

      @ Mel,

Yeap. yeap. Check out Cat’s previous comments. She presented a very nice argument into this post. Really worth discussing. Haha.

  • roni says:

This so called myths and hoaxes are still debatable. One cant declare them as such, not unless one has proved them otherwise. we should be very careful about them. legends and epic stories should be treated with respect. The Philippine archipelago have a very very rich and diverse culture, if we study our geography, christianism and western culture is an alien to the region’s history. Also, one can’t isolate the philippine’s cultural heritage, the surrounding cultures such as of the Malayans should also be put into consideration. But anyways, we are talking about the possibilities, right?

    • Silver says:

Oo naman roni. There are always possibilities naman for these.

Ganyan ang science di ba. Its in a continous debunking chorva. hahaha..

At oo, tama ka na iconsider din natin ang other cultures kasi sa malamang e may influence sila sa culture natin, right? ;)

The problem with us is that we allowed the americans and spanish to occupy our land that is why we lost our history and ended up brainwashed.
