America’s Next Top Model bi-racial photo shoot: Racially charged?!
I’m not ignorant about racial discrimination, bias or however you mix those words. I don’t really understand why people here in my Barrio States of America gets infuriated if say a white person, paints himself black and be black for a moment, or a black person paints himself white to be a white person. Ok. So, what? Kung alam lang nila, that whitening products are the best selling shit in Asia hahaha! Yes, most Asians wants to be white. Filipinos included! Haller! Hahaha!
America is just uber sensitive. Shit like these are non-issue to me. But “me” is not them. And this recent America’s Next Top Model bi-racial photo shoot created some buzz where some in the US media says that this is so racially charged. I’m was ready to puke. I’m was just not getting it!
So, let’s take a look:
Tyra told bleach blonde Erin Wagner she was going to be “Tibetan, like the Dali Lama, and Egyptian”; Southern belle Laura Kirkpatrick was put into makeup to look “Mexican and Greek“; Jennifer An, who is Korean, was told she was going to be “Botswanan and Polynesian”; African-American Sundai Love was made to look “Moroccan and Russian“; redheaded Nicole Fox was “Malagasy and Japanese,” while blonde Brittany Markert was put into makeup to look “Native American and East Indian.”(Source: America’s Next Top Model Bi-racial photo shoot)

While the only things that seemed to confuse the lithe models on the show were particulars about the countries, nationalities and races they were representing, some members of the press are calling foul. (Source: America’s Next Top Model Bi-racial photo shoot)
Ok. I still didn’t get it. What’s racially charged about this?!
If you see anything abominable, let me know.

No. 1 ang mga Pinoy sa mga gustong pumuti – kabilang na ako dun pero di naman ako gunagamit ng whitening. Ikaw, Mother, ayaw mo bang pumuti?
Gusto. Para pag-uwi ko sa Barrio, Miss Barrio Fiesta ako. Kumpleto ako nang rekado. Me cream and creamer, me moisture at moisturizer. Minsan nga glass cleaner na lang. Acido sana.
I see art, nothing’s wrong with these photos for me.
me too, theres nothing wrong with these photos
masyado lang silang mataas ang tingin sa sarili nila.
art of fashion ang make up yan. kala ko ba open minded sila… hmm..
[...] Take a look at these pictures. To me, they’re beautiful. But some in American media were a bit rattled. Find out. [...]
because they can’t accept the fact that such bi-races exist? yun lang nakikita kong puna doon. other than that, wala nang logical explanation for it or they’re just stupidly sensitive.
that’s all.
i second emotion
loves them esp pic #5. i rarely see a black beauty with chinky eyes
ako yon ateng. ako yon. buksan mo kasi mata mo pag magkasama tayo.
gasted, mas ako yon. when i see pic number 5, i see myself. HAHAHHAH kaso lang mas skinny sya
She’s not black, idiot. She’s Korean, they painted her to be a “Botswanan and Polynesian.”
gaga ka yeah! i don’t think she said that she was black! u moron!
@ yeaH – she’s not black, she’s brown, can’t you see. hahaha leeeche you. HAHA
di ba when you combine races, you create a totally different race?
ewan lang, ang alam ko kasi ganun e.
like French + Greek = Grench.. parang ganun.
yun ba yung ayaw mangyari nung mga umaangal?
LOL races. Sorry ha, I dont take issues like this as racial blah blah. Technically speaking, walang superior at inferior race. Pare-parehas lang tayong tao. May mga peeps lang talaga ang hilig mag-categorize or label ng ibang tao like bading, tomboy, negro, intsik and even patay gutom.
Labeling is such a shit.
I dont see anything wrong sa picture. It’s all in the mind. All men are created equal and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I, thank you…
(Naks, feeling beauty queen! *lol*
)
i think the pictures are great. ewan ko lang kung bakit sobrang issue yan for most people. this will not affect their lives anyway. makitid lang talaga siguro yung utak ng karamihan.
totoo nga lang talaga that most asians gusto pumuti. for some reason, i am not one of them. hahaha.. di ko din alam. kasi morena talaga ako at ang jowa ko sobrang puti. pero di ko pa rin inambisyon ang pumuti. i love my color!!!
Ako nga maputi pero i envy those morenas glorien kasi they can wear any color they like without looking dull.
Wow, I haven’t seen this episode yet, am such a newbie =))
i can’t see anything racist here. God! It’s for art’s sake! And the pictures look GORGEOUS, why waste an incredible idea?? =\
Wala namang racist sa look nila, even sa poses.
JenniferAn’s shot looks so amazing! And the makeup of the models were great, and done excellently. WHY, why say that it’s racist.
The issue here is beyond beautiful photos.
It’s about the motive behind the photo shoot, what was Tyra’s point in doing this? Was it to raise awareness about the cultures? Did anyone learn anything about the cultures/ethnicity that each girl represented? Why aren’t they in modern clothing, because you wouldn’t be able to tell which “race” they were attempting to represent?
Distilling a people’s ethnicity and culture to makeup and costumes is wrong.
