Ang Mamatay ng Dahil Sa Iyo…

14 June 2009 25 Comments

We always hear this famous line in our national anthem. Ang mamatay ng dahil sa iyo.

In English, to die for you.

To whom we die for? Of course, its one patriotic line to die for our motherland. Let’s admit it: we can feel that patriotic feeling whenever we sing this line in our national anthem. I can really credit Mr. Jose Palma’s patriotic pen – for stirring those nationalistic feelings within us, whenever we sing the lines of our national anthem.

And remembbering this late afternoon (I am usually awake in late afternoons, after sleeping upside down in our kisame the whole morning) that is our 111th Independence Day – I was asked by my dear old konsensya: “How patriotic are you? Are you willing to die for your motherland?” Haha. Even my dear old mala-safeguard commercial konsensya tried to ask me that one question. Toinks. I slept too much ata. Haha.

But what if someone really asked me this question? How I will answer it?

Sounds like a tough question for a 24 year old who tried to live a life the usual way – friends, games, internet, blog, TV, junk food, mom’s cooking (I am an avid fan of my mom’s cooking..haha) etc. etc.

I would be willing to die for motherland.

For the sake of 3 people.

    Yanee, Pacito and Zoe.
    My three pamangkins.

And also, I would be willing to die for a pair of Christian Louboutins size 42.

    That’s all. LOL

Silver, you’re only 24 and yet parang napakarami mo ng naranasan sa buhay. I admire you for that even your sense of ‘patriotism’….minsan nakakawala lang ng gana ang mga recent na pangyayari sa paligid eh…

    • Silver says:

Haha.

But I guess, my own definition of patriotism is pushing forward the common agenda of your people and dont forget the values of our forefathers.

Patriotism too, can come in different ways and shades.

the national anthem was written at the time the people thought that had already gained independence from one colonizer, Spain. It urged people to continue defending the freedom of the country.

in the EDSa revolution I, it was not the national anthem that incited people to rise against dictatorship. It is Bayan Ko.

    Ang bayan kong Pilipinas,
    Lupain ng gintó’t bulaklák.
    Pag-ibig ang sa kanyáng palad
    Nag-alay ng gandá’t dilág.
At sa kanyáng yumi at gandá,
    Dayuhan ay nahalina.
    Bayan ko, binihag ka,
    Nasadlák sa dusa.

    Koro:
    Ibon mang may layang lumipád,
    kulungín mo at umíiyák!
    Bayan pa kayáng sakdál dilág,
    Ang ‘dî magnasang makáalpás!
    Pilipinas kong minumutyâ,
    Pugad ng luhà ko’t dálitâ,
    Aking adhikâ,
    Makita kang sakdál laya!

not so many know that this was a poem written by Jose Corazon de Jesus (Huseng batute) in 1929. It was made into a song when Constancio de Guzman set the music.

During the height of protest against marcos, it became a sort of national anthem for demostrators and silent majority. It gives you goosebumps whenever you hear it sung.

and it also made Fredde aguilar more popular.

Martin Luther King Jr. in his twenty’s said,

“If a man or a woman has not discovered something he would die for, he ain’t fit to

As we all know, he was assassinated and 110 cities in the U.S.A were burning like hell.

This is indeed true Rob. I also learned that lesson – the hard way! :D
