Argentina, The Philippines and the Manny Villar connection
What do we have in common with Argentina? A lot of things. They were under a military dictatorship. We were under the Marcos dictatorship. They have Evita, we have Imelda. They have the famous “Don’t cry for me Argentina“. We have “Nakalangoy ka na ba sa basura“.
This is largely a country of Gauchos while we were Los Indios of Spain. They have a population of 40 million. We’re better. We have 90 million. They are Catholics who adore Jesus Christ. We adore Manny Pacquiao, Jesus Crist!!! They’re one of the most corrupt nation in that part of the world. We exported it to them, we call it: knowledge transfer.
So what’s Manny Villar got to do with the Argentinians?
Well, there was this excellent political advertisement in Argentina that even won the silver lion in the Cannes Lions Contest in 2006. It’s the award-winning political ad campaign of Argentine presidential candidate Lopez Murphy.
He copied it.
Here’s the original.
And to think I was admiring the Villar Campaign team! Tse! Na-onse na naman ako! Hmpt!

DIYOS KO! PATI BA NAMAN IDEAS NG IBA, NINANAKAW NI VILLAR?
MAGNANAKAW! MAGNANAKAW! MAGNANAKAW!
Nakakahiya sila. I have no respect for his PR firm. Plagiarism is a crime…
pst! Kutz! did you hear about plagiarized speech?! hahaha! Si Manny V. Pangilinan nangopya ki Oprah! Hahahaha!
Really???? Wazzzz!!! Donde esta link??? Give me the link! Eh naman may speech writer naman yan Ateng eh. Hanuvey, PR people magnanakaw tapos speech writer magnanakaw ulit? What kind of people sorround this fool?
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/187652/mvp-borrowed-from-other-grad-speeches-says-sorry
HAHAHAHAHAAA!!! Totally embarassing! Kawawa naman true bloodied blue eagles pa naman, hehehehe. Pero in fairness, he owned up to it and did not pass the buck. I believe him when he said that he had help in drafting that speech kasi a businessman as busy as MVP may not have time to be reading JKRowling or watching Oprah davah?
Katulad rin ng case ni Manny Villar, once na pinalabas mo na ang ad, or the moment MVP read that speech, accountable na sila kung anong content nyan.
“HE OWNED UP TO IT”
to me, it does not give him back his lost credibility! nag-Wharton pa sya! wala naman palang utaks haha!
i remember Oprah’s speech, di ba that was most talked about dito noon? i love that speech! nanakawin nya lang pala hahaah he is just so guilty, it’s unforgivable haha i think he should return the doctorate given to him
Heheheee, kainis! Eh ang mga ganyang graduation inspirational chorva pa naman kailangan ikaw talaga ang gumawa kasi you have to inspire these fresh grads by giving them an idea of your own personal journey.
A few years back, I came across this speech by John Gokongwei, Jr…nung ni launch ang Gokongwei School of Management dyan din sa Ateneo… very personal ang approach and it is very inspiring. Here’s the link:
http://www.jgsummit.com.ph/speech-jgkw-ateneo-som-20020301.html
Haaaaay……
I can’t view na the original Argentine video…
Seriously, it happens to me sometimes as well. If there’s a video na hindi agad mag start sa PC ko, I would click pause and wait for a couple of minutes. Pag play ko ulit, okay na sha. Try mo.
Plagiarism is a crime di ba? If not – walang originality.. ergo… sino ang gagayahin nyan kung manalo yan? Definitely not Cory..
I remember Rico Blanco cried foul when allegedly Gibo Teodoro used his song ‘Posible’ without permission. Hmmm, ano kaya gagawin nung ‘original’ sa ‘pirated’? ~LOL~
……let me add: ano kaya gagawin nung original writer nito kapag nalaman niyang nakopya pala nung kampo ni mr. villar ang pinaghirapan niya…hmmm….
langya! ang galing mo talaga sister! sapul!
thank u sisterette hahha! i wonder if the Argentinians know this already di ba? they must have paid a lot of money to create such an award winning piece o baka naman, original idea lang talaga to nung Villar Campaign? HAHAHAHA na ninakaw nang mga Argentinians? HAHAHA
MANNY VILLAR IS THIEF!
HE STOLE DESIGN OF THE ADVERTISEMENT OF A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE IN ARGENTINA!
HE STOLE THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF THE ONE WHO DESIGNED THAT ADVERTISEMENT!
MY GOD, A THIEF!
A THIEF IS THE TWIN OF A LIAR!
aww.. ang lupet naman ni villar.. just so you know.. di na ako team orange, team yellow na din ako hihi
wala lang
papost nito sa blog ko ha
@pehpot!
hahaha ano ba?! ang gulo nga naten sa Barrio dahil iba-iba kandidato naten, you should see how rabid di Kutz ki Gordon and Jepoy too hahaha! Si Malen is Gibo, si Buraot is Perlas hahaha o di ba? masaya ang santacruzan sa Barrio?
anyway, i honestly don’t think that the blame lies on Manny Villar. He should fire his Campaign people who did this to him. they are supposed to make him look good and not this. for so long he has some really effective campaign, yong pala kopya! hindi maganda yun hahaha ang galing pa naman nung basura ad nya kahit na nalunod na tayo hehehe ano ba!
HALLER! Hindi daw nila alam kung it was intentionally copied! HAHAHA!
BTW: Many thanks to ABS-CBN for picking up our story:
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/04/05/10/did-villar-camp-copy-argentinian-politicos-ad
more power to campaign adds manager of MANNY VILLAR keep up the good work hahahahahahahahhaha hanep yan
i have just seen this political ad sa abs-cbn tonight. to be honest, maganda siya kung hindi mo malalamang kinopya lang. kaya lang, too bad for manny villar dahil: the world is getting smaller because of the internet! hmmm, nakita na kaya ng argentinian people ang nakopyang political ad ng kanilang pangulo? @_@
Whoa, I wish more people would know about this.
Nakakahiya naman.
lack of originality. sayang.

incidentally, if wawam (2010presidentiablesdotwordpressdotcom) is right about the information both ads may have come from the same ad agency (tbwa) with a worldwide network.
wawam reported that the local ad agency is TBWA backslash Santiago Mangada Puno.

[...] However, I was dumbfounded when Barrio Siete uncovered that his new political ad campaign ‘Scroll’ was just a sheer copycat of a political campaign ad entitled ‘Upside Down’. The ad was used by presidential candidate Lopez Murphy in Argentina. The campaign ad even won him a silver lion award in the Cannes Lions Contest in 2006. Check out what the readers are saying about the uncanny resemblance of the ad campaigns ‘Scroll’ and ‘Upside Down’ here. [...]
im not a Villar supporter but reading your comments here, it only shows how pathetic ang mga pinoy, so what if he copied it? hindi na natin problema yan, strat nila yan, pati ba naman yan pinagaaksayahan natin ng panahon? it only shows how intimidated and threatened tayo kay Villar.. kse we all know, that in reality, he might be our next President.. hindi nyo naman pera ang ginamit dito.. hay ewan koba, kaya hindi ko masisi si Adam Corolla sa comment nya about the Philippines..
Juana Change also copied that ad, almost word for word.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-UbMaEhxgI
thank you for the link. i put it on the sidebar
If an agency belongs to a network, sharing of great ideas (format included) is not plagiarism. I dont think tbwa concealed this to the candidate.
It’s an adaptation.
Hindi ako Villar. Pero ayoko kay noy.
i think they just released a statement.
As wawam opined:
“It’s possible the local ad agency paid royalties to the Argentina ad agency or permission was given for use in the Philippines.”
Bottom line, however, is that the brilliant idea was copied from the original Argentinian version by the Filipino counterparts – albeit in better form, some may say.
Well, Villar probably does not care if it’s original or not…probably the same reaction he gave when asked if he watches pirated DVD movies:
Villar said, “I don’t ask if they’re pirated.”

Btw, one could also say, “kokopya rin lang…sa talunan pa?” The ad didn’t help Lopez Murphy “convince the people that we have a proposal, leadership and project that are superior to what the current government offers.”
@baycas,
natawa naman ako dun sa talunan, yeah, the Argentinian candidate did not win. but in fairness, maganda yung message, except that… well..
My friends and I are actually impressed when we saw the ad. Brilliant, we thought. But then it was just copied pala, kahit na with permission, haynaku nawala ang pagiging impressed namin. Back to swimming sa basura. Hahaha
@mel,
sabi ko nga dun sa baba, it’s a great ad if you saw it the 1st time di ba. it’s a different feeling if you know there’s another one out there. hehe
take note lopez murphy also lost in the polls… looks like money villaroyo will be suffering murphy’s fate..
~wink~
It’s finally out; TBWA\SMP (ad agent of MBV & Co. since 2007) defended the Villar “scroll” ad and MBV & Co. knew…
“From the outset, the adapted format was made known to our Client. The agency did not conceal the truth. That’s the truth. And nothing but the truth.”
Just the same, the idea is not original…and to think my wife and I were initially impressed.
Re: the ad concept, kudos to the Argentinians!
@baycas,
It’s a gread ad. If you saw it the first time, that ad involved a ton of thinking process putting together words and sentences that could be read backwards. I’m sure a lot of people admired that ad.
fyi guys,
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/04/07/10/ad-agency-defends-villar-scroll-ad
Ad agency defends Villar ‘Scroll’ ad
MANILA, Philippines – The ad agency of Nacionalista Party standard-bearer Sen. Manny Villar on Wednesday defended its “Scroll” TV ad, which has been widely compared to the “Truth (Upside Down)” political ad of Argentinian candidate Lopez Murphy in 2006.
In a statement, TBWA\Philippines admitted that it adapted the Villar ad from the Argentinian politician’s ad. The agency said it belongs to a worldwide network of ad agencies and that many of its ideas for ads have been adapted in several countries. Among its ideas are ads for adidas, Pedigree, Absolut, Apple and Nivea.
“The fact is, many ideas of the local agency have been adapted in many countries in our network, the most recent of which is the work it had done for Absolut vodka. That’s how powerful ideas become even more powerful,” the agency said.
It added: “While the ad format was adapted from The Truth ad by TBWA\Argentina, the message is genuinely Manny Villar’s. And it hopes to inspire a country deeply steeped in hopelessness, negativity and cynicism.”
The agency said that while the local adaptation of the Murphy ad has generated positive feedback, other sectors have used the ad to attack the Villar campaign.
“From the outset, the adapted format was made known to our Client. The agency did not conceal the truth. That’s the truth. And nothing but the truth,” it said.
A post on the Barrio Siete blog (http://barriosiete.com/argentina-the-philippines-and-the-manny-villar-co...) was the first to make the connection between the Villar ad and Murphy’s 2006 ad. The ad, which was created by Recrear advertising agency, won the silver lion in the Cannes Lions Contest in 2006.
In both ads, a voice starts talking about the problems besetting the country and how the president cannot solve these problems. While the voice is speaking, the lines of dialogue appear on the screen one by one in descending order. The ad then takes a shift in tone as the candidate reads the lines from the bottom going up, indicating that the candidate sees things from a different perspective.
In an interview, NP senatorial bet Gilbert Remulla said he did not know if the new TV ad was intentionally copied from the Murphy ad.
“What we know is that it tested very well. For us, the message is more important. We can’t be accused of plagiarizing anything because the execution is different,” he told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

“magbasa para di magmukhang _____”
may link na po yang news item na ‘yan sa taas…
mahiram ko lang po…tutal uso naman ang panggagaya…na may kaunting “twist.”
“magbasa MUNA para di magmukhang T_____!”
Kahit ano pang explanation na with permission ng ad agency, the point is kinopya pa rin and hindi na siya ‘impressive’ political ad. And I’m sure they did not expect na may makakaalam ng naturang Argentine ad and magkakaroon ng ganitong issue. Perhaps they should stick na lang doon sa jingle na ‘swimming in a sea of basura’ kasi very catchy pa rin yun kahit na nakakairita. Hahaha
Ayaw ni Atcheng Jamby niyan.
Matawagan nga. Hahaha
@Mel
LOl same nga ng Ad Agency..
Wala diba?
At hindi galing kay Murphy yung Idea.. sa SAME Ad Agency ni Villar nanggaling kaya they have the right para don..
Anyways..
Vote for Eddie Villanueva nalang. :p
i see nothing wrong with that argentinian ad being copied by the “orange” pres wannabe. common, nothing’s original anymore.
but you know with his wealth, He really can help.. He is able, let’s just pray that he’s also sincerely willing.
Phil needs a government “wipe out” to really change..not a yellow, orange, green and so on and so forth shirt bearers. Maybe a “HITLER” would be a far better candidate. = )
It is a common practice for ad agencies to adapt ideas made by their foreign counterparts and come up with a localized version suitable for the local population. You will see this on a lot of advertising materials and campaigns done this way even for major brands.
I have to hand it to TBWA \ Santiago Mangada Puno as they have done an excellent job at executing this ad and I don’t see anything wrong with what they did and how they done it. Drafting up that message to synchronize perfectly in the end was a lot of work.
Having worked with the people behind TBWA \ Santiago Mangada Puno in the past, I could say they are a creative bunch and let’s not go out of our way and ridicule people in the advertising/creative industry, they are just doing their jobs and doing it well.
Villar definitely had a lot of “motivation” poured in on this ad.
Archon, if you’re talking about local adaptation of central creative campaign and client-approved – this is okay… For example McDonald’s global campaign of I’m Lovin’ It ™ and Coca Cola’s OPEN HAPPINESS ™. They are both global companies who would like to reach a unified message to their markets… it’s pretty normal.
But in the case of Villar and the Argentina team… it is VERY ANOMALOUS. Haven’t they agreed on using the same creative route? Are they in contact? Do they have common interest that legally binds them?
Whether there is a legal protection in this case, it is very obvious that the treatment was DUPLICATED and by doing so – it is described as a VERY BAD INDUSTRY PRACTICE.
Also, TBWA (Argentina) did not mention that it’s THEIR PROPRIETARY PRO-BONO AD – this is my biggest question to that agency… Perhaps, this was fully paid by their political client. Clients most likely own the creative rights.
I’m sure, the creative team in TBWA/Mangada is not proud of this job, but Villar’s money helps the agency run kasi bayad. Weighing between money and creative independence, money weighs more…
I have seen ad agencies who rejected their clients over creativity issues… Sana sa Pinas meron din ganyan para lahat ng ad agencies, global or local, highly-motivated to do an excellent and original job…
Back to the VILLAR issue, whether legally covered or not, DUPLICATION ito and can be subject to Intellectuall Property legal dispute… at nakakahiya sa industriya ng advertising itong gawaing ganito… nakakahiya!
By the way, this could be an issue of copyright infringement rather than plagiarism…
Truth is, I’m not even sure if the Argentinian version is the very first to use that format as I have previously seen this used for non-policital and environmental issues. I am still looking for an old copy of one VCD I got way back in the 90′s. It had a very similar format used for an environmental message did by students when the French did their Muroroa atoll Nuclear test. This was way before Murphy ran and lost (sana si Villar din) in the elections. Sana mahanap ko and I will immediately upload on Youtube.
Indeed creative people can be “motivated” by a client’s “clout” during a rush job like this, specially from a client like Manny Villar. I’ve heard first hand how money flows freely on anything related to Villar’s ad projects. One sad truth about clients in the Philippines and other third-world countries is that these clients interfere and get too much in the way of the creative process.
Johnonymous, so far we have nothing to prove nor disprove that TBWA did the ad without the permission of the original client in Argentina. And I would rather give them the benefit of the doubt than raise speculation as getting permission is mandatory much like in using of stock footage and photography. If their team had not secured permission then true it would be something that will stain TBWA’s reputation and could cause Mangada-Puno to be booted from being a TBWA agency.
@Archon Digital: who’s ridiculing the advertising/creative industry people? I think wala namang sinabi that ‘ridicules’ them.
Mel, read through the rest of the comments
Let me make my statement clear to you that this was in reaction to the context of “some” but “not all” of the comments that were accusing the advertising company of plagiarism. Both firms are under TBWA they share trade secrets and resources globally. Accusing an ad agency of blatantly copying an idea is rather insulting and my term to ridicule was actually an understatement.
These creative people were “motivated” by Villar’s “clout” and did their jobs well. Truth is, the idea behind the “original” Argentinian ad was not entirely original, I know I have seen the same format more than once and it was not even related to politics.
Manny Villar is a businessman and will always be a businessman. That is why he want to become president so as to protect his own interests. He says that he wants to help the poor. Do you need to become president to do that? Please don’t vote for Manny Villar.
Dianne Mandal (dazzlin_rishy28@yahoo.com)
I SERIOUSLY HATE VILLAR!
Akala niya kaya na niya lokohin mga pinoy. dude, sobrang matatalino na mga pinoy ngayon so malamang they will definitely VOTE WISELY –and that will happen by not voting you!
SHE’S FULL OF DRAMA! And halatang she’s not telling the truth! kakairita!
People, please DONT vote Manny Villar. He hired the craziest agency in the form of TBWA/SMP. Call them the one of the best ad agency, knowing them, their out of the box ideas are all lies. They are overly priced to do that.
Both TBWA and VILLAR are bunch of money thieves!
Di ba kayo natuturn off sa campaigns sobrang pushy sya maging presidente?
How much each commercial cost? For sure babawiin din nya yan if ever wag naman sana manalo sya.
PLEASE DONT VOTE VILLAR!
Villar is a lost cause. Six years from now Villar will look back and remember how much of a dent on his fat wallet this elections has cost him.
I’m pretty sure since you’re all fired up about this ad agency that you have a good experience to tell about TBWA/SMP why not let us know? I’m interested to hear about it.
For one to become “one of the best”… You have to learn and master the “devils workshop” were all the lies, stabbing and immorality are enhanced to the maximum level… then the devil starts making insane ideas for graduation. Every graduate receives a bribe, so more evil will come out.
Aside from that, what a crazy idea to have popular womanizer celebrities as their official endorsers. Ain’t that so obvious?!
Sorry to say this but appreciating them is like living in hell.
Don’t let them treat us like idiots.
I believed our dear presidentiable is an A+ alumni from this workshop. Money manipulates the creative mind, so is the passionate heart.
In reality this is the campaign: M”o”nny Vi-lIar
