Arizona targets ethnic studies ban

19 May 2010 5 Comments

What started as a noble action to curb illegal immigration and related crimes, now, Arizona touched ethnic studies that further infuriated a lot of people. And then, get this, even Miss USA is now hitting the headlines with some political overtones. I hope this will not escalate into one problematic race relations here.

When we came to the United States, even though we speak English in the Philippines (can you imagine? ini-inglis ko ang kalabaw sa bukid sa barrio noon?), we have to re-learn the language, assimilate into the culture, so we won’t get lost and be treated like part of the great melting pot of what the United States is known for. This is actually what made this country great – a bonding of too many different cultures coming together into one body called the United States of America.

I love to learn other culture and other languages if I could. Para making hada is easy. Hehehe! In fact, that’s the reason why I love to travel, pag afford.

In a nutshell, the drama in Arizona is like this. In one corner, those who are against Ethnic studies claims that these are just ploy and/or another word for racism and segregation. While the other side of the fence says that it is actually good since it offers avenues for people of all ethnicities to learn about, appreciate and understand other culture. To forbid these program is to accept ignorance.

So, to keep you updated of the ramblings in the State of Arizona, here’s one video I’d like to share:

Arizona ethnic studies Fresh on the heels of a new immigration law that has led to calls to boycott her state, Arizona’s governor has signed a bill banning ethnic studies classes that “promote resentment” of other racial groups. Gov. Jan Brewer approved the measure without public statement Tuesday, according to state legislative records. The new law forbids elementary or secondary schools to teach classes that are “designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group” and advocate “the overthrow of the United States government” or “resentment toward a race or class of people.” The author of the Arizona law and a state representative who voted against the bill talk to CNN about its impact.
