Barrio Siete: Are we doing it right?
In other news... our current Alexa rankings is now at 819,197 as of 9:30am 7/13/09. Tabi tabi lang. Baka masagasaan kayo. Hehehe!
Now, there’s one Barrio Siete reader who wrote a very nice social climbing entry for da barrio that I would like to share to you all. He is Rob Angeles from Forth Worth, Texas; the author of Social Media Philippines whose journey to Social Media started 4 years ago when he became part of a company that markets word-of-mouth services to other companies. That started his curiousity with the power of conversations and communities. According to him, today, he is trying to solve the daily riddles he sees in the social sphere on how social media can help individuals, organizations and businesses.
With that… this is what he wrote about Barrio Siete.
Barrio Siete Tribe: Doing Things Right And Flying High
So, who’s doing it right and why? If you’ve been blogging for years, I assume that you are already aware of what we call as the righteous web. Structure, grammar, language, theme and formality dictate many things and sometimes, judged by it. So, why not break the rules and create your own identity? Or maybe, keep things simple.
To give you a brief introduction, a barrio, in Spanish, means a rural village. Siete means seven. So, is Barrio Siete a place? Yes! But it is also a phase in life. Life in the barrio is not a walk in the park. Struggles are normal and to have a good life is a dream. You will not find food stamps in the barrio nor health care benefits. If you are born in a barrio, expect a rough ride that will bring meaning to your life.
What is Barrio Siete
Barrio Siete is a social-economic group of bloggers. The site is being managed by Reynz, a Filipino-American, who’s currently based in New Orleans working as the CFO of the largest housing agency in the state. With a crew of 21 writers as of this writing, barrio siete provides interesting posts that discusses topics from politics, entrepreneurship, working abroad, life in barrio siete and etc.
Doing Things Right
When Barrio Siete started, I was there. I saw how things started and participated in conversations. Many of us can learn from their style of creating conversations. Actually, it will be unfair of me to call it style because it’s natural.
* Language – You don’t need to be in high-school to understand blog posts. The flow of conversations is the typical, normal type that doesn’t require you putting a dictionary on your lap. Please be aware that some posts are written in our native language. The barrio needs to reach out right?
* Topics – Current trends from local and international stage. The writers are not just based in the Philippines. Some are in the US, Europe, Middle-East and other parts of the world. Topics are not just focused on a particular topic but are diversified thus giving their audience different flavors to read. And with flavors, they will go back for more.
* Participation – Every reader in Barrio Siete participates. They share their experiences, ideas and thoughts. Barrio Siete people are creators and participants. And it’s not because they were asked to but it’s because they want to. It is not just a blog but also a hub for Overseas Filipino Workers who wanted to connect with other Filipinos around the world.
* Authors – Not just ordinary authors. Some are from our local news papers and others are natural brains who can turn any topic into a barrio buzz. It’s hard to find good writers who can just throw ideas in the air and with blog communities, blog posts are important. Barrio Siete publishes 3-4 blog post a day. With content being published consistently, I think Google will fall in love with you.
* Mission – Yes, Barrio Siete has a mission and you will find it in their About page. And many of us haven’t thought of our blog’s mission yet. Do you have one? Why need a mission? To constantly remind us on why we started our blogs.
Flying High
Barrio Siete has posted the 5th State of the Barrio Address talking about the latest thing happening in the barrio. New writers have joined Barrio Siete and new site statistics have been released. So, why are they flying high?

As of this writing, there are 3,069 comments from the top 10 commenter. These my friends are just some of the stats I got. Are they flying high? No, they don’t have a secret formula on how they did things. Some individuals or group of people are just natural in writing and in engaging people. These are the people you will see in the Barrio.
Authenticity and transparency are key ingredients in expanding your reach in the social sphere. Some spend hours, days and months in trying to figure out how to improve their communities. I think the answer is simple, think like people from the barrio and maybe it will help you simplify things. Remember, life in the barrio is simple.
