Before you try drugs, think about the kids
I was running… catching a picture of the older brother, carrying his younger brother… it was a sight to behold… I asked them to wait for me… as I snapped this picture.
I pray that they will be safe and have this place as their playground because I was told by one resident who I was talking to, that these kids could not even play outside. I pray they grow up to be successful and many more good wishes as I watch them join their father for one leisurely walk… today… to a place I call Ground Zero for drugs and murders. Last July 7, there were activities again. Double murder. This place is so notorious that people’s advice on how to stop murders here is to call on the cops to stop responding to calls from this place.
And so, I joined a Volunteer Group to do some work in this neighborhood. Will it have an effect on the negative activities here? We don’t know. We can only hope that this will work.
What we know is that me must do something.
Today’s work is cleaning, tree-cutting, painting and more… Tomorrow? Kid’s games.
And so, I went home today beat up. Snapped a beer and puffed a smoke. As I sat outside of my apartment, I can’t help thinking about those kids… And I can’t help thinking about Jeri’s story. So many lives have been broken and lost in this place where I do volunteer work.
And so… before you try drugs… think about the kids. They’re typically the victims.

Absolutely, you are right kapitana.. many young guys are victims of this illegal drugs..
and its such a waste. these kids will just grow up and continue what they are living right now. my concern is that, the ongoing drug problem in manila is somewhat unchecked.
And IF these children grow up, too often they know nothing but how to repeat the cycle of drugs, violence, and crime. The best thing you can do is catch them when they’re young, show them other possibilities, and give them faith that those possibilities ARE within their reach. Not enough people willing to stick their necks out to do that. Good for you, volunteering. It’ll make a difference to someone. Don’t judge the worth of the effort by 100% success; if you can save even one or two, and they go on to do the same, you’ve done a good thing.
exactly the point holly and BTW, thanks for leaving your footprints. it’s a scary place to do volunteer work, everyone seemed to have lost hope in this neighborhood, but we believe otherwise. i was honestly very tired after the work, but it was fulfulling.
Nice to hear that Kapitana! pwede ka nang maging anti-drug czar! heheh.
