MANILA, Philippines – The new generation Philippine peso bills, which came under fire for its design that included error-filled maps, has received accolades from an international currency association, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
In a statement, the BSP said the new generation currency banknote series was a finalist for the Best New Banknote Series award at the 2011 Currency Conference of the US-based International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA) in Singapore last October 5. Vice President Jejomar C. Binay has sought the help of historians in rectifying what could be an oversight in proclaiming revolutionary General Miguel Malvar as the rightful second President of the Philippines.
In his letter to National Historical Commission chair Maria Serena I. Diokno and heads of history departments of various universities and colleges, Binay said he received information that Malvar was Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo’s right-hand during the war against the United States and took over command when the latter (Aguinaldo) was captured by American forces in Palanan, Isabela.
Since he took …

He said one study found only slight defects that can easily be fixed, another said it’s more serious and the third believes it’s “very serious.” The terminal was largely …

How are you doing President Noynoy?
Well, my name is Reyna Elena. I was your number one supporter during the election, attacked by an unbelievable online hatred during the campaign because of my support for your presidency. Aherrm!
Oh, by the way, I thought I’d share this with you.
Here is my Elementary School in Castilla, Sorsogon. This picture was taken last week by my friend from Amsterdam. It’s one Uragon building. One unbelievable technology. The best. Western standards will drool at how mini, major and super-typhoons blasted that building away …

MANILA, Philippines – The doctors of former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo have advised the ailing congresswoman to seek medical treatment in the United States or Singapore, her spokesperson Atty. Raul Lambino said.
According to Lambino, however, Arroyo chooses to remain in the Philippines to quash speculations that she is avoiding the plunder charges filed against her.
“Sensitive siya sa public opinion e. Sinasabi niya, ‘Kapag ako umalis sa bansa, sasabihin nila tinatakbuhan ko itong accusations against me.’ To the extent of maybe putting her life in danger,” said …

In a media briefing, Dr. Juliet Gopez-Cervantes, Arroyo’s personal physician, said a team of doctors led by veteran orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mario Ver put the halo vest, also known as a halo ring or crown, to immobilize the cervical spine.

MANILA, Philippines – National Artist for Literature Bien Lumbera on Tuesday said he is disappointed that the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) decided to capitulate to the demands of Catholic groups to shut down the controversial “Kulo” art exhibit, which shows defaced religious images.
“I think that it’s an unfortunate move on the part of CCP. That leaves CCP open to pressure anytime something, an art object being displayed, raises the ire of certain sectors,” he told ABS-CBN News Channel.
“Once they give in …

Blood stains. I saw them everyday for months during a certain period in my life. Blood on the floor, on hospitals gowns and on previously pristine white sheets. The room could almost be a set of a horror movie if not for the dozens of crying babies and nursing mothers..
For weeks it was always the same routine. Everyday, I would march the hallway armed with my medical artillery. Thermometer, stethoscope, a sphygmomanometer and a piece of paper. The whole bond …

I had not seen a mirror since I had been in the hospital. When visitors came, I just asked whoever was with me, if I looked ok. So I never knew that my appearance had changed so dramatically, that even my own child didn’t recognize me.
I hugged and kissed and kissed and hugged my little girl. She was still dazed from sleep and probably didn’t understand why this strange lady was hugging and kissing her. Her dad was watching and so was her grandma, …

I was diagnosed with diabetes in July of 2001 as doctors tried to save my life.
Weeks before that day, I was rapidly losing weight but I thought it was just because of my extreme schedule. The country was in another upheaval. The media knew no rest. I hardly slept and ate at abnormal hours. I was in denial even as I felt my energy ebb out of me like a punctured water balloon.
Finally, a few days beforer that fateful day, I called in …

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said Tuesday that he is amenable to non-compulsory sex education in public schools, based on parents’ approval.
He compared alternative reproductive health education for high school students to religion classes held after school hours.
“Naniniwala ang Constitution na dapat matuto sila sa pananampalataya nila. Pagkatapos ng regular class, open ang mga silid-paaralan para doon sakop ang mga religious instructors, pero mga Katoliko lang with the permission of their parents,” Luistro told radio station dzMM.
He also believes that sex education lessons, which should be values-laden, would even be better …

What is the Bologna Accord?
In 1999, the Ministers of Education of 29 European countries agreed to make the school systems of their countries compatible with each other. Degrees from one country would then have to be accepted …

As schools across the country opened today, we are hearing pretty much the same thing that we’ve heard before: overcrowded schools, public schools severely lacking basic facilities like comfort rooms, etc., etc. There is news I read that, you simply cannot blame the “private school mentality” now, because parents want their kids to not only have decent education but also basic school facilities like comfort rooms.
We’re not even short of rational debate on how to improve public education. We …

Imagine my new role: Reyna Elena, La Kapita de’l Barrio Siete, defender of Jejemon rights! Bwahaha!!! But don’t laugh now. In fact, I’ve been labeled as a Jejemon already.
Jejemons are called the new jologs, labeled as people of inferior mentality. If they are of inferior intellect, then how in the world were they able to invent and be creative with a brand new language of their own? And if you’re a jejemon hater, show your prowess of superior intellect by translating their language. Care for a challenge?

Recently, we heard this language fad – yeah, the jejemon language thingy – spread like wildfire among the youngsters of today. Not only the language became the fad but it also included some of the fashion too – the jejecap. And now, the fad is becoming more infectious (thanks to media), DepEd is now urging to purge the mentality out of the classrooms.
As it begins the yearly cleanup to prepare schools for the start of School Year 2010-2011, the Department of Education is also seeking to cleanse school-age Filipinos of …

Adam Wheeler is an impostor. Faked his credentials. He’s the notorious Harvard Hoax. Why is this oh so familiar?! Recto Avenue?! Morayta, perhaps?! Or is it because we’ve run across a few Pinoys who have pretty much done the same thing? Maybe not to the extent of what this guy has done.
For example, what some Pinoys would do when they get the chance to “study” in America, is to over-glamourize and/or embellish their credentials. Notice, I did not say “fake”. For example: how many times have we ran across Pinoys …
