Drilon ‘will not inhibit’ from Corona impeachment trial
Senator Franklin Drilon will not withdraw from the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, even after the defense panel accused him of partiality and asked the senator-judge to inhibit himself from the trial.
“The rules of the Senate is that the rules of inhibition is addressed to the person… the senator, and I will not inhibit because there is no basis for the motion to inhibit me,” he said.
In a motion filed Thursday before the Senate as an impeachment court, the defense said Drilon showed his partiality at least twice during the impeachment proceedings.
It was Drilon who compelled Supreme Court clerk of court Enriqueta Esguerra-Vidal on Jan. 18 to admit she was in possession of Corona’s Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth.
Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile then asked her to surrender the documents to the Senate.
Drilon was also responsible for getting Taguig-Pateros Register of Deeds Randy Rutaquio on Jan. 19 to tell the impeachment court that Corona was the attorney-in-fact of his daughter, Charina, when his Taguig property was transferred to her.
The senator defended his actions, saying he was merely trying to ferret out the “truth.”
On Thursday, Drilon said he was not affected by the move to keep him from doing his duty as a senator-judge because inhibition in this instance is primarily a matter of choice.
“The inhibition is addressed to the person… the senator and we will not inhibit,” he said. — VS, GMA News

… personally, i really don’t mind if the perception of him being on the side of the prosecution team is true… if Tupaz was the one who asked the same questions, Cuevas would automatically object again and again… Sen. Drillon, being one of the judges, simply used his power to bring out the truth and i salute him for that.
