Eklat’s Most Admired Women of 2009

Hello frenemies! How art thou? It’s been a very busy time for me this past few weeks attending parties and events (read: early campaigning) so please forgive me if I haven’t been in touch with you barriotics for quite a while.

Anyway, the year is about to end with a bang, literally, because of the impending Mount Mayon eruption but let’s just wish and pray that it’ll be a mild one and not catastrophic.

You know, the year 2009 has been very good for me because I’ve learned a lot especially in reaching out to the poor, the needy and the sick. Thanks to the assistance of my beloved Yaya Indira, I consider myself quite an achiever this year. A lot of people has inspired me to be a better person and I’d like to honour them in this humble list I call, My Most Admired Women of 2009.

These are just my choices ha, not the choice of the writers here. If you don’t like the personalities in this list, well, I don’t care. Hahaha! Afterall, this is my list and not yours. Feel free to make your own sungit though if you want.

So ladies, gays and gentlemen, here they are.

10. Kate Winslet.

Have you seen her Oscar-winning performance in The Reader? My gosh, she totally looked fierce despite the ugly make-up and dowdy costumes. I did not noticed it that much though kasi nga her acting is fabulous, I thought I was watching her from a window and not on screen. Yaya Indira and I even cried when she accepted her award during Oscar night. She totally rocked that dress, was it Galliano or Valentino, I totally forgot. Anyway, I liked her this year because after being nominated and losing a lot of times, she finally won. Love her to death!

9. Sarah Palin.

She lost her vice presidential bid to Joe Biden and eventually resigned as governor of the state of Alaska but that did not stop her from continuing what she already started. Despite a lot of controversies surrounding her and her family, Sarah Palin use this to her advantage and published a best-selling book. Some say she has a promising career in poliics but critics say the opposite and will eventually destroy her. Well, let’s all find out in the coming days.

8. Angelina Jolie.

She’s not just an actress and a mother to 6 gorgeous children and wife to hunk Brad Pitt. She uses her celebrity power to help war-afflicted areas like Darfur in Sudan and help relief operations in other parts of Africa. Angelina may be a bitch to many Jennifer Aniston fans but you can’t help but admire what her efforts in making this world a better place, especially for children.

7. Susan Boyle.

As my Yaya Indira always emphasize, “Do not judge the book by its cover, especially if you’re not a judge”, because this woman from England proved that to us. Wearing a ‘duster-like’ dress to a Britain’s Got Talent audition, we thought she’s just another ‘laughing stock’ among the bunch of wannabes but instead, she became the biggest talent ever to come out from that season. Yes she lost but who has the last halakhak now? Susan Boyle is singing and laughing all the way to the bank.

6. Maricar Reyes.

You may recognize her from that raunchy sex videos with that doctor. If I was in her place I would probably die from shame and embarrassment but Maricar survived everything. She kept her silence during the controversy and instead of putting herself in further kahihiyan, she used the ‘popularity’ to further her career in local show business. She guest starred in the top-rating soap “May Bukas Pa” with superb ratings and even got a lead in an afternoon drama series. Proving to us that life is not over until you say it’s over. Way to go girl!

5. Lady Gaga.

She totally changed the world of pop music with her hit songs Just Dance, Poker Face, Paparazzi and now, Bad Romance. Fashion critics may call her style luka-luka but Gaga is a style icon on her own. She redefined the word ‘eccentric’ that even Grace Jones or Pokwang cannot justify. She’s not just a performer but a brilliant songwriter and musician too. Wait ‘til you see in January, she’ll make hakot awards in the Grammy.

4. Aung San Suu Kyi.

If you mention the phrase Girl Power, I don’t think of the Spice Girls, instead I picture the ever delicate Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. We thought she’ll be released from house arrest this year but the military junta did not give her her freedom. She was slapped with yet another violation thus extending her house arrest for the nth time already. Despite this sad event, she continues to inspire a lot of people that despite being unfree, her mere existence in this world is enough for us to fight for democracy.

3. Beyonce Knowles.

Okay, first of all I am not a Beyonce fan before but when she gave up her ‘thank you speech’ last MTV VMA to Taylor Swift, I totally love her na. I think she is a sweet, down to earth diva who has all the right to have an attitude but despite being in that state in her career she remains to be grounded. During her concert in Australia, she sang “Halo” to a very sick little girl on stage and it melted my heart. Sasha Fierce indeed is a fierce angel.

2. The Aquino women.

Kris Aquino is no longer the one and only star of the family because during the death of our beloved Cory Aquino, we saw the other Aquino women who is not annoying and genuinely simple, sophisticated, classy and tactful.

1. Michelle Obama.

A woman of style, substance and sophistication, she is not just another lady married to a president. Michelle Obama is a huge personality on her own but she manages to be in the same limelight as her husband Barack. Her sense of style is unpredictable and fashion people are always in awe of her unusually unpredictable choice of look but turns out to be an exceptional ensemble. In the coming years, I wouldn’t be surprised if Michelle does a Hillary too. Minus the boring outfits of course.

There you have it frenemies. I hope these women inspired you as much as they’ve inspired me.

is is the ‘gurl’ behind “The Misadventures of Mel Beckham”. ‘She’ graduated with a double major in Management and Entrepreneurship. ‘She’ grew up in the city but now lives in the bukid near barrio siete juggling work as a farm manager, office secretary, messenger, construction worker, housemaid, make-up artist and babysitter. Despite ‘her’ busy schedule, ‘she’ finds the time to blog in between work, and errands using ‘her’ primitive mobile phone. ‘She’ plans to take ‘her’ MBA soon but ‘her’ multiple jobs prevent ‘her’ from doing so unless going to school will get ‘her’ paid to pay for ‘her’ utangs. Before ‘she’ dies, ‘she’ hopes of owning a pair of Louboutins, and landing on the cover of Vogue, kahit sa Vogue India lang. Whichever comes first.
