Growing HIV cases in Manila

29 January 2010 13 Comments

redRibbonFirst, get yourself educated with the disease. Here’s one good site. I bet you, most people in Manila thinks that HIV is AIDS.

Now, I have no clue why the papers would plaster this phrase “call center workers” on their headline about the rise of HIV in Manila. I thought it was pretty irresponsible. Why? Soon, call center workers will be stereotyped as spreading the virus which is not true.

Unfortunately, in the Philippines where the use of condom is like a mortal sin, you even get a capital punishment from the Church, 700 lashes if you get caught using it! pwe! thus, people can’t even pronounce it, let alone say it in public. Like if you utter these words in public, you become excomunicado. Com’on! Say it! Penis! Vagina! See what happens?! Filipinos have no clue about safe sex. I once brought home a box of condoms for my nephews, pinag-tawanan lang ako nang mga gago. Andyan sila, dose-dosena na ang mga ogbon, who were mostly got married at a tender age, like 3. Leche oo!

I was actually shocked with the news that I was reading – as in, it says that these kids were organizing sex orgies in Manila?! Huh?! Sama nyo naman ako! I mean, holy crap! They do these things in Manila now?! Sheet! Makauwi nga neks week! Ang mga bata nga naman ngayon. Ibang piko na ang mga nilalaro.

Anyway, the growing HIV cases in Manila, as plastered on the news, is a cause of alarm given that those diagnosed with HIV are those mostly from ages 15-29, who are well educated and pretty ignorant about safe sex and the spread of the disease. Now, isn’t that ironical? Well-educated on everything else but safe sex.

“PGH on Wednesday said the number of Filipinos infected with HIV rose dramatically in the past 10 months and now includes young urban professionals such as call center agents. Doctors at the PGH Infectious Disease Treatment Complex said the number of human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) cases in the hospital rose to 100 in the past 10 months. Records from the Department of Health showed that the number of HIV cases rose to 709 last year, compared to 528 in 2008. Dr. Edsel Savana of the PGH Infectious Disease Treatment Complex said most of those who contract HIV are sex workers, gays and drug addicts. Dr. Katerina Leyritana, however, said hospitals have also recorded HIV cases among young urban professionals such as call center agents. She said majority of the recent HIV cases tend to be younger, mostly from ages 15-29, who are well educated. Some of those infected said they got the illness after engaging in casual or group sex, which they discovered through social networking sites on the Internet. “There are a lot of sites right now that can organize orgies quickly. A lot of young people believe in casual sex,” she said. If current trends hold, the health department said HIV patients in the country could balloon to 20,000 cases by 2020. The PGH said it will conduct a massive information drive to warn people about the possible dangers of unsafe sex. (Source: ABS-CBN)”

  • Neil says:

Ayan kasi.

    Hurray to Pinoy discipline!

Kapag sa susunod na forum at tatanungin ang mga kandidato, ang tanong ay hindi “…do you support the Reproductive Health Bill”.

Ang dapat na tanong, “…what will be your health programs about unplanned pregnancies in the Philippines?”. Unplanned — like casual sex among the under-28-years or worse (nabubuntis na hindi ginugusto). Unplanned — the young parents na ayaw pa, sana next year pa iyong susunod pero ayon, sinorpresa dahil hindi marunong gumamit ng condom o IUD’. The parents who want — hanggang tatlo lang — or the parents who want to space their children.

This is sad, pati mga HIV causes mayroon na rin pala ang Pinas :(

I think only time will tell kung kailan puputok yung HIV “outbreak” if we can call it that sa atin. Sabi nga, a lot of people practice PMS/ unsafe sex. Mura lang naman ang condom kung iisipin…

I also agree na parang mali yung ginawang report na parang na-zero in dun sa call center agents yung pagkakaron ng HIV. Kapitbahay namin sa amin eh, nakichismis agad, pano kasi my bro and sis both work in the call center industry.

Practice safe sex, better be safe than sorry later.

Start muna siguro sa basics like introducing to the human reproductive system then pagdating ng highschool at college e advancing na ang topics like family planning and social issues/implications regarding overpopulation and AIDS etc.

  • delta says:

its not just abuot unsafe sex.. its also about respect for yuor partner and being faithful

  • Mel says:

abstinence and loyalty is the key to success.

    char!

  • Silver says:

    True.

Try mentioning penis, vagina, scrotum, ovaries, condom or any other sexual positions, then you’ll get giggles even from a 50 year old. Dagdagan pa ng simbahan that doesnt believe in reproductive health management, hindi daw pro-life yun.

Isa pa yang report from ABS, mali ang pagkakaconstruct.

Everyone can get infected with it. Holding off your libido, be faithful to your partner and using condoms are one of the ways to avert infection. Hay.
