How will we remember Gloria Arroyo?

12 June 2010 15 Comments

With just a little over two weeks remaining in Gloria Arroyo’s presidency stay in Malacanang, her supporters and detractors, in fact Gloria Arroyo herself, are already hard at work crafting two very different versions of her historic and/or corruption laden legacy. And you better believe me when I say that no one is working harder to leave a favorable mark than Gloria Arroyo herself. In fact, she bombarded the airwaves with videos of her accomplishments. The video shows an economic boom. Great highways, whether you travel North or the South. With an annoyingly insulting caption that goes:

She is also using the June 12 Independence Day celebration as rah-rah day for what else, her accomplishments. Cost? P10 million pesos.

Raissa Robles writes, “Even before stepping down, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is frantically rewriting the history of her presidency.”

Now that President-elect Noynoy Aquino finally waits just offstage to be sworn in as the nation’s next President, P. Noy is expected to stare at this:

And this too, which is his immediate problem.

How do you run a government with an instant budget deficit? Where will you get the money? This is what President Noy is inherting.

Arroyo will be back in Congress. Her administration is full of disappointments after disappointments. I wonder if her expected presence in Congress will be a way for her to redeem herself. Or maybe, just maybe, she’s making sure that the song she’s singing in her video presentation won’t be dismembered by Aquino.

But to me, Arroyo’s legacy is this list – a very long list. Capping her legacy is this:

    From my notes on facebook:

I heard a rumor that today is Independence Day. Oh dear, what has she done to this historic day?

Aren’t we’re supposed to remember that day we became independent and remember the true meaning of being free? Instead we get bombarded by fake images of her accomplishments.

Ok, the highway to the North is true, but the one in the South is a photo-op one that ends in Alabang. That should have stretched all the way to Matnog, Sorsogon.

Ok, economic activity is commendable – but hey! I’m not dumb not to understand the great contribution of OFW remittances amounting to about $15 billion a year that is feeding the local economy so corrupt officials could just siphon off government funds to fatten their wallets.

So, how are you doing today compared to 10 years ago?
