In Davao City, it’s the Princess vs. the Frog

9 May 2010 9 Comments

I’m officially a resident of DC since birth and conception. I’ve seen it grow from just a city into this peaceful metropolitan that even though I currently work and live in a different region, I always consider Davao my home. Ang tahanan ng aking lahi. Charing.

Since I was a little gurl (walang kokontra), Davao City has been ruled by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte (except for that 3 years when he served as congress representative and his Vice Mayor Ben de Guzman took his place). The media calls him “The Punisher” but for me and most residents of Davao City, we simply call him Mayor.
Ngayon na matatapos na ang term ni Mayor, sino nga ba ang perfect person to replace him.

Inday Sara Z. Duterte is Mayor Rody’s daughter. She is currently the city’s Vice Mayor. Isn’t she gorgeous? She’s got a lot of brains too.

She is currently running for Mayor of Davao City kung saan makakatunggali niya si Rep. Prospero Nograles of the first district of DC. As you all know, Nograles may be the speaker of the house, but for me and most residents of Davao City, we simply call him “annoying”. Hahaha!

Oo, bias ang article na ‘to kaya kung maka-Nograles ka, I suggest you stop reading na. Charing!
Anyway, this is (I think) the third attempt of Nograles to run for Mayor and unfortunately for him (but fortunately for us) hindi siya nananalo ever. In fairness, as a lawmaker, Speaker Nograles can do wonders (kahit na hindi ito pabor sa majority) but as a leader and as a mayor of Davao City, I just couldn’t see him to be as effective as the Dutertes.
The thing that most Davaenos are proud of of living here is the peace and order situation of the city. Most outsiders would probably debate on this considering the fact that there have been recorded deaths linked to the so-called Davao Death Squad (urban legend much?) and is currently being investigated by the Commission on Human Rights thus making the city ‘not that peaceful’ afterall.

Here’s my take on that.

As long as I can make rampa in the dead of night, alone and in a dark street and arrives in my destination without getting mugged, I consider it safe.

As long as I can swirl my cellphone in the busy streets without thinking that some criminal will snatch it away, I consider it safe.

As long as I can use my laptop in the open without getting held up in gunpoint or any deadly weapon, I consider it safe.

As long as I don’t worry about the safety of my pamangkins, Davao City will always be our home.

Davao City is my place to be. I don’t mind if the Dutertes will rule our beloved city for it’s entirety as long as the current situation is maintained and developments are still pushing through. My family and I trust them.

Meanwhile, Mayor Rody is running for the city’s Vice Mayoralty post versus the former mayor of the city Benjamin de Guzman. And Nograles’ son Karlo (the speaker’s errand boy) is running for congress representative in the city’s first district versus the city’s number 1 councilor and broadcaster Mabel Sunga-Acosta.

is is the ‘gurl’ behind “The Misadventures of Mel Beckham”. ‘She’ graduated with a double major in Management and Entrepreneurship. ‘She’ grew up in the city but now lives in the bukid near barrio siete juggling work as a farm manager, office secretary, messenger, construction worker, housemaid, make-up artist and babysitter. Despite ‘her’ busy schedule, ‘she’ finds the time to blog in between work, and errands using ‘her’ primitive mobile phone. ‘She’ plans to take ‘her’ MBA soon but ‘her’ multiple jobs prevent ‘her’ from doing so unless going to school will get ‘her’ paid to pay for ‘her’ utangs. Before ‘she’ dies, ‘she’ hopes of owning a pair of Louboutins, and landing on the cover of Vogue, kahit sa Vogue India lang. Whichever comes first.

I completely agree with this. I always have that feeling of safety when I walk the streets of Davao. I am the only one in my family who was given a chance to go through college via a scholarship and I stayed in Manila. All my siblings worked and went to college in Davao. And I have this tendency to just cross the street wherever esp pag wala naman sasakyan, hehehehe. Nope, my siblings will drag me to the nearest stoplight where there’s a pedestrian line and cross the street from there. This is what they say, “Naay disiplina diri sa Davao, ayaw dad-a ng batasan sa taga Manila dinhi” HHAHAHAHAH!!!! Supalpal evah ang byuti ko.

Which is why it irritates me so much na may mga wala gani katunob sa Davao who ask, “yeah you have peace and order but at what cost?”. You should have seen the Davao before and after Duterte before you say anything.
