Kembot Girls shames Filipina women in Nacionalista Party sorties

“PARA SIGURADONG MAPANGALAGAAN ang kapakanan ng kababaihan, pinakamagaling at pinakamarami ang babae sa ticket namin. Dahil naniniwala ako sa kanilang kakayanan at integredad. Suportahan natin sila (To make sure that women’s welfare is upheld, we have the best and most number of women in our ticket. Because I believe in their capabilities and integrity. Let’s support them).”

These are Sen. Manny Villar’s lines in a Nacionalista Party TV ad featuring its women candidates. With the “Kembot Girls” joining NP’s campaign sorties, Gabriela challenges Villar to stay true to his claims.

The TV ad notes how strong women power is in the NP ticket. It is thus disheartening to know that instead of going along the line of women’s empowerment, the NP has been using scantily-clad women dancers to attract more audience to its rallies.

We call the attention of the people in charge of organizing NP political rallies to give due respect to the party’s women candidates as well as to the women voters, by refraining from using women in a demeaning manner just to attract a big audience.

NP’s women candidates, including Makabayan senatorial candidate Liza Maza, have appealed against the inclusion of the Kembot Girls in NP’s campaign sorties. We couldn’t agree more with Maza’s statement: “Kembot Girls have no place in political rallies and we don’t need Kembot Girls to sell our platform.”

Surely, NP is confident of its political platform. We understand that a campaign sortie needs some elements of entertainment to keep the attention of its audience, but using scantily-clad, gyrating dancers to attract audience is not entertainment, but a commodification of women. And the NP, by employing such gimmickry in its sorties, is not empowering women as it claims to be.
