Koreanovela vs Teleserye

8 September 2009 44 Comments

Hello mga Ateh, Kuyah and everything else in between!

I have a confession to make.

Habang busy kayo sa kakapili ng inyong presidentiables, naging uber busy din ako the past weeks sa kakapili between Jun Pyo at Ji Hoo haha. I’ve recently caught the Korean Wave myself, and it’s changing me big time. Tuloy, when I grow up, I want to be a Korean na haha.

Watching Boys Over Flower is my guilty pleasure haha (walang pakialaman ng trip lol). Many times I find myself unconsciously singing and dancing to K-pop music. My current ring tone is Nobody and I can’t help but clap when it rings lol. I tune in to Arirang channel on afternoons to learn Korean. Shucks, I can’t even stop making those Korean peace signs when taking pictures.

I know, I fail at life haha

As far as I know, the Korean Wave owes its success to K-dramas. OO alam ko yun, Kdramas are very corny, predictable, cheesy with very simple plot – an arrogant rich boy piggybacks a poor girl and says “Saranghaeyo” and then they live happily ever after. But despite its predictability, K-dramas has been enjoying a phenomenal success around the world.

If you notice, Koreans has been aggressive in marketing their culture through their K-dramas – from the way they set their tables when they eat together to family values to fashion sense to hairstyles to public baths to tourist spots to keeping their old age traditions alive – you will see all of these in every kdrama which makes them more interesting than our usual primetime kapamilya teleseryes. Plus, their production looks very expensive and they’re really good at being funny.

Ganito kasi sa ‘tin…

Most of our primetime teleseryes revolve around money, power, greed and revenge, with many sampalan, barilan and fighting scenes. And recently, sex themes have began making waves with shows like Margarita, Eva Fonda and Katorse (hellooo nun katorse ako eh naglalaro pa ako ng bending at chinese garter) Maloloka ka sa twists and turns of events. Meanwhile, ang kontrabida eh parang pusa na 9 ang buhay, tipo bang namatay-nabuhay-nasunog-nabuhay-namagmuli pero nabulag eventually mamamatay din either by a gun shot, papasabugin ng bomba o kaya masasagasaan ng truck. HAHAHA. At napansin nyo, laging Mayor or Gobernor ang kontrabida?

I love watching TV to relax esp. after a day of stress.

Dito sa tin, we view our entertainment industry as uber jologs and ka-cheapan to the highest level. The Koreans think otherwise. They view the entertainment industry to be a big business that has a domino effect. It paved a way to the success of many more industries. Look now, they’re becoming global – many more tourist visit Korea’s tourist attractions they see in movies and k-dramas. Their traditional dress (hanbok) has made its appearance at a prestigious Paris fashion show. A number of Korean restaurants abroad has begun to rise as Korean food appeal to the global market. Hollywood has done remakes of popular Korean films (like Lake House and My Sassy Girl). Many more countries are buying the rights to remake some k-dramas. Korean celebrities are now making waves in Hollywood (that GI Joe guy, Wondergirls and Rain). Even our very own Charice Pempengco was discovered in Star King, a popular Korean TV show.

We had just as much of an opportunity as the Koreans, but look at us, we’re being left behind. Kontento na tayo sa kakagaya at kakagawa ng remakes – My Girl, Kim Sam Soon, Only You, All About Eve and recently Lovers in Paris (Piolo and KC) and Staiway to Heaven (Richard and Rhian).

Wahaha!

xoxo,

Seo Bae-Nye (aka Chuvaness, haha)

malensky is is a true blooded Waray-waray from a certain barrio in the Eastern Visayas region. She graduated without honors in Engineering at some University along the Pasig river. A real life opportunist, self-proclaimed artist and street-smart babe who frequents the parlor, making friends with parloristas to get free highlites lol. She works in QC with slightly above minimum wage and plans to further her studies in Ricky Reyes Learning Institute so she could try a career out of haircutting, with manicure and pedicure.

    @malen,

i knew it! magaling kang mag-observe wa halong biro gurl! parehas kayo nang observation ni Neil. he left a comment dito sa entry na to sa reyna elena: http://reynaelena.com/2009/08/30/what-music-can-do/

    sabi nya:

KPOP lately is so westernized–and black. At malupit sa marketing! Packaging kung packaging :D

Yeah, we’re so waaaay behind. Hindi na tayo nag-evolve sa ballads at bandang kanto / jologs hiphop (na hindi naman kumikita dahil mga dukhang masa ang market–pa-CD burn lang ang kayang i-afford and not their full albums hahaha). Or prolly wala silang reason mag-evolve dahil di naman sila namo-motivate mag-innovate like the Koreans since sobrang talamak ng piracy dito. But think about it: mas talamak ang piracy dun sa Korea pero they were able to manage sales up to hundreds of thousands because of heavy marketing—-FAN IDOLATRY.

Matakot sana mga Pinoy/OMB lalo dahil ang mga KPOP fans dito sa Pinas ay willing to shell out funds because of KPOP fandom…myself included.

ang mga Pinoy? we seemed to have hit stagnation. wala nang push to excel.

    • malensky says:

neil is soo right. packaging kung packaging! expensive ang production wether kdrama o mtv…kaya very entertaining panoorin

actually, lagi kong nilalagy to sa resume ko: KEEN EYE FOR DETAILS

      lols

      • Rob Angeles says:

Yep! Bilib talaga ako sa packaging nila..Sad lang kasi sa area na to up to now di nagmamature sa local setting natin. Parang nobody wants to be bold. Or wala na fresh idea.

        • pehpot says:

masyado kase takot mag expereiment ang mga artista.. at alam mo naman sa kmultura natin.. ang hirap magpakilala ng bago hehe.. not unless of course gawang banyaga iyan.. try lang ha.. imagine nyo si Vina or si Zsa Zsa na may suot ng mga damit nila Sandara.. ewan.. hehe

          • malensky says:

good looks + kick ass hairstyle + great fashion = packaging at its finest!

@pehpot, siguro kase we only have 2 disctinct seasons kaya limited ang pwedeng isuot haha we don’t get to enjoy those scarves and trench coats here, ang sagwaaa lols

we can get by all throughout the year by just wearing summer clothes

  • reyna elena says:

  • dencios says:

I want nobody, nobody but you
I want nobody, nobody but you
I want no one else but you
      Can’t have anyone but you
I want nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody

      Why are you trying
      To push me always
      Know that I hate it
      You ignore what I’m saying

      Why are you trying
      Send me to others
      Push me away like
      Little each day wide

Sayin this is for my own good
Sayin that you’re just not worth it
      Stop here right now
      Coz you know me enough
That I will come back to you
      No matter what

I want nobody, nobody but you
I want nobody, nobody but you
I want no one else but you
      Can’t have anyone but you
I want nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody

      Hold the pushing
      Won’t change my feeling
      Happy to have you
More than willing to please you

      Beggin you please don’t
      Walk away from me
      I can’t be happy
      Waiting from your side

Sayin this is for my own good
Sayin that you’re just not worth it
      Stop here right now
      Coz you know me enough
That I will come back to you
      No matter what

I want nobody, nobody but you
I want nobody, nobody but you
I want no one else but you

    • malensky says:

i have several officemates na korean nationals, hinde nagja-japorms at hinde magastos…laging may lunchbox and laging sumisigaw haha

  • Reesie says:

kacheapan talga ang pinoy telenovelas lalong lalo na pag may effects. nako, mas okay pa yung effects ng sinaunang star wars or star trek. walang ka budget budget. walang quality. graveh. nakakaloka.

  • kotsengkuba says:

kung ang japan, they have captured the world through their anime ang manga, korean invaded us with their k-drama. sana in the near future, maisakatuparan ng pilipinas ang world domination kahit man ang sa pagbabalik ng moro-moro at sarswela.

    • malensky says:

      HAHAHA

sinabi mo!!! super stress ang Katorse!!! hapon pa naman pinapalabas…eh andaming bata kaya nakakapanood.

o diba, can you imagine pag ma-dominate ng BAGOONG ang world market haha, parang kimchi.
