When I was still a university student back then, I used to take  Abnormal Psychology as one of my subjects. Although, my course is not technically specializing in the clinical set-up, it still made me curious about the makings of the human mind and behavior. One of the fascinating topics that we have discussed in our AP is Multiple Personality Disorder.

What is Multiple Personality Disorder?

Dissociative Identity Disorder is the other term for Multiple Personality Disorder. All of us have one solid identity, as in pagkakakilanlan. Pero para sa isang tao na may MPD or DID, nagkakaroon ng isa pang katauhan within himself. Itong katauhan na ito or alter-ego exists somewhat independently than the other identity.

Sa tindi ng pag-abuso, naging defense mechanism na nang taong yun ang pagbuo ng isang alter-ego to shield himself from the pain he is going through.

LOL.

One of the noted case of MPD:

The 1953 movie The Three Faces of Eve tells the story of Chris Sizemore, a real-life woman with the disorder. She was thought to develop DID in reaction to witnessing several terrible accidents at a young age. That movie described three personalities that were successfully merged or integrated into one within one year. More accurately, the person depicted in that movie had to contend with 22 personalities that took more than 45 years to be able to coexist in a functional way.

Signs and symptoms of dissociative identity disorder include:

  • lapses in memory (dissociation), particularly of significant life events, like birthdays, wedding, or birth of a child;
  • blackouts in time, resulting in finding oneself in places but not recalling how one traveled there;
  • being frequently accused of lying when they do not believe they are lying (for example, being told of things they did but do not recall);
  • finding items in one’s possession but not recalling how those things were acquired;
  • encountering people with whom one is unfamiliar but who seem to know them as someone else;
  • being called names that are completely unlike their own name or nickname;
  • finding items they have clearly written but are in handwriting other than their own;
  • hearing voices inside their head that are not their own;
  • not recognizing themselves in the mirror;
  • feeling unreal (derealization);
  • feeling like they are watching themselves move through life rather than living their own life; and
  • feeling like more than one person.

Hehe. :D

It fascinates me how dynamic, complex and complicated the human psyche is. Whatever na nangyayari sa atin, it will surely have an effect on our personas.

Anyway, we are the masters of our destiny and the one who hold our sanity together.

    Whew, what a relief. Hahaha!
    Sometimes kasi when I get hurt (charing!) by ‘men’, I created this characters named Samantha and Gabrielle. In charge sila to avenge moi. So far, successful naman sila in hurting back those who hurt me. Hahaha! Lukaret talaga ako noh?

  • Snow says:

    Same here. Done some self-checking at thank God, wala naman ako. *LOLz*

    Kidding aside, if you know someone who has an MPD, ipagamot agad para hindi na lumalala pa.
