Little Miss Beauty Queen

30 July 2009 35 Comments

Let’s take a break from SONA mania mga kabarrio because this is one very, very important commercial break.

The 2009 Miss Universe is fast approaching. It will be on the 23rd of August, live from Nassau, Bahamas.

It’s always been a dream of mine since I was a little girl in Barrio Siete to be one of those girls parading in my elaborate and magnificent national costume and proudly representing my native country of England. Charing!

Speaking of beauty contests, maraming ganyan sa barrio. I hate that kind of contest. It’s stereotyping gays. Nakakainez Veneracion!

Anyway, may isa pang beauty contest na pinapractice din worldwide ang umagaw ng aking atensiyon when I saw a feature on tv about a reality show featuring little girls ages 5-8 years old participating in beauty pageants. This reality show features the backstage drama, the pageant itself and what their mothers (and some fathers) do so that their kids will be crowned as a beauty queen, or princess for that matter. May ganyan din dito sa Pilipinas. Pinauso ng Little Miss Philippines ng Eat Bulaga.

In general, it seems harmless. Cute pa nga tingnan ang mga chikiting parading in their gowns and costumes, in full make-up and showing their talents di ba? Aminin, kyut na kyut ka kay Aiza Seguerra noong sumali siya sa naturang pakontest and although hindi siya nanalo ay umarangkada naman ang kanyang career bilang child actress and now as a singer-musician. Back to the topic, I’m sure tulad ko ay inambisyon niyo rin ang maging ganyan, ang maging beauty queen at a very young age. I know hindi ako nag-iisa sa ganitong dream. Right ladies?

In fact, I have a niece who once joined a contest like this and I, as her tita, have been very supportive of her to the extent that I did everything so that she gets to bring home the crown. No, hindi ako sumipsip sa mga judges and organizers noh. I’m beyond that kahit puede kong gawin yun pero it’s so effortless and unchallenging. Hahaha! Anyway, we got her the best glam squad and the best outfits that we could get. My cousin (her mother) and I also trained her the best way to answer beauty pageant questions. I should know, I’m a certified Thank You Girl and I’ve learned a lot. Hahaha! In the end, happy kaming lahat. Kahit di niya nakuha ang top prize ay masaya na rin kami dahil 1st runner ang niece ko and she’s very happy with her pageant experience. The keyword here is HAPPY.

Ito ang pinaka-importanteng dapat tandaan ng ating mga parents when putting their children in competitions like these.

GUSTO BA ITO NG ANAK MO or IKAW LANG ANG MAY GUSTO NITO?

I’m no Child Psychologist but I’m definitely sure that this is so wrong. That reality show shows just that.

Hindi man ako nanay biologically, at least I know that things you do for your children should always be for their best and not for your own. ‘Di ba mga mothers?

I know one day ay mag-aasawa din ako. And I will make sure that my kids will grow up to become beautiful, respectful and law-abiding citizens like their father and me.

Tulad nito.

Mel is is the ‘gurl’ behind “The Misadventures of Mel Beckham”. ‘She’ graduated with a double major in Management and Entrepreneurship. ‘She’ grew up in the city but now lives in the bukid near barrio siete juggling work as a farm manager, office secretary, messenger, construction worker, housemaid, make-up artist and babysitter. Despite ‘her’ busy schedule, ‘she’ finds the time to blog in between work, and errands using ‘her’ primitive mobile phone. ‘She’ plans to take ‘her’ MBA soon but ‘her’ multiple jobs prevent ‘her’ from doing so unless going to school will get ‘her’ paid to pay for ‘her’ utangs. Before ‘she’ dies, ‘she’ hopes of owning a pair of Louboutins, and landing on the cover of Vogue, kahit sa Vogue India lang. Whichever comes first.

Korek Ate Antonette!
