Manny Villar and Dick Gordon are missing the point

They’re missing the point
By Ricky Poca of the Cebu Daily News

In a recent no-holds-barred forum, presidential aspirants Manny Villar and Dick Gordon took the opportunity to question the competence of Noynoy Aquino, who’s been leading in the surveys. They asked him what he has done compared to their achievements as government officials.

Gordon showcased the transformation of Olangapo City and the former United States military bases in Pampanga after the Americans pulled out. Villar questioned Noynoy’s performance as a legislator in the House and the Senate.

I don’t know if attacking other candidates would win votes for them, especially because the issue cited by the two may no longer be effective in convincing voters. We had presidents of remarkable competence who were seduced by power and created political crises unheard of in mature democracies.

A classic example is Ferdinand Marcos, who wanted to be president for life. Another is the best educated and well experienced president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who has become the most unpopular president in Philippine history because of serious public doubts about her character.

What Filipinos are looking for now is not primarily good track record in government and competence but integrity. Fortunately for Noynoy, the people believe it’s something the other candidates are found lacking.

What’s striking is Noynoy’s response to the latest Social Weather Station survey, showing that Villar is closing the gap between them. Noynoy said the result was expected, given the frequency of the broadcasts of Villar’s paid political ads flooding the radio and television. Noynoy said his camp didn’t put out a lot of political ads yet because he wanted to abide by the rule against early campaigning.

Indeed, a character such as Noynoy’s is a rarity in politics nowadays, and this endears Noynoy to the people even more because it just shows that Noynoy does respect the rule and the spirit of the law, which Villar disregards. I guess it’s the attitude of politicians like Manny Villar that scares people. They will do everything just to get elected, so what will stop them from doing everything just to stay in power or acquire more of it?

There is no question that Villar is ready to spend billions of pesos for his campaign. His tab right now may be in the hundreds of millions already. And so people are asking – what will a businessman like Villar do when he gets elected president?

In Dick Gordons’ case, he wants to know what the Aquinos have done for Tarlac. I think Gordon has forgotten that Cory Aquino’s contribution went beyond Tarlac. She was instrumental in restoring democracy in our young, sad republic, for which she was recognized by leaders and peoples the world over.

Cory also showed that she was not hungry for power because she readily stepped down when her term ended, despite the advice of her allies who enjoyed being in power more than she did.

Villar and Gibo’s ads on tv is really annoying me to the point of not watching local channels anymore. I thought may batas tayo on how long lang dapat ang airtime ng ganitong ads? Well, knowing comelec’s track record on this, disqualified na siguro ang lahat ng candidates.

Hindi na rin surprising ang moves ni gordon and villar against noynoy. They’ll do everything to ruin him.

Fortunately for Noynoy, the people believe it’s something the other candidates are found lacking

And fortunately for a bozo like Erap back in 1998, people believed so too – to the tune of a landslide victory in the 1998 presidential elections.

Noynoy is to 2010 what Erap was back in 1998.

We keep saying that people “believe” that Noynoy has “integrity”. The question that jumps out is quite simple:

What is the basis of this “belief”?

Just because a “belief” exists does not make something necessarily true.

Millions of people also trooped to the Edsa Dos “Revolution” in 2001 because they “believed” that what they were doing was right. Again, this “belief” turned out to be another boomerang that hit Da Pinoy smack bang up his pointed arse.

So now we see how there is this popular belief in this and that about Noynoy.

What is the basis of this “belief”?

    It’s simple, really™ — though not for the small-minded. :D

Do you like to lead a society and put your perspectives in place? Go out and be known. Huwag magtago… lumantad dapat.

  • Jet says:

Ok fine, so Noynoy will not steal. Now what will he do?

Questions on competence and achievement is fair game.

    • caloy says:

There is no question that Noynoy is very much qualified to lead the nation, he is competent, could be trusted, with unblemished name and people want him. True competence and achievement is a fair game – and so is Villar’s obvious use of power with Daang Hari and C5 Extension. Watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqds4z1Uk4I. You will find out exactly that a highway that circles around the subdivision as if looking for something is not a good achievement of good governance by Villar.

The central issue for the 2010 elections is governance. The wide lead that Noynoy Aquino enjoys in poll surveys stems from the people’s desire for good government. Good government is the exact opposite of Gloria Arroyo’s administration. The people will vote to repudiate Gloria’s corrupt, egregious rule. The people will choose Noynoy, for he embodies honesty, integrity, and trust — the necessary attributes to clean up government and institute the hard reforms. (Source: Central Issue)

@Jet, sya iboto mo muna si Noynoy so you will find out ano ang gagawin nya, hehehe.

Si Villar, ano gagawin nya? More power and more money? Si Gibo, to protect GMA? At si Gordon, it is not his time…NOT his time. I voted for Gordon for the Senate at nakakawalang gana the way he attacks Noynoy…

  • Hustisya says:

6.) Marami siyang ginawang commercial, nagbuhos na siya ng 4 bilyong piso ( and still growing ) sa TV and radio industry.

7.) Marami ang naaliw sa mga commecial niya, sharpens one’s skill in detecting lies and deceptions.

12.) Masipag at matiyaga si Villar. Masipag sa korakot, matiyaga sa napangasawa.

13.) Tuta ni Marcos si Villar.

14.) Tuta rin siya ni GMA.

  • Jon says:

    Mr. Ricky Poca,

Now, I do not know if you are one of those most people considered paid reporters or bloggers of Noynoy or maybe one of his “Trapos” wanting him to win so you can expect something in return. I disagree with you when you said, “What Filipinos are looking for now is not primarily good track record in government and competence but integrity.” Are you out of your mind? If you recall, I do not believe Cory restored the democracy of the Philippines. Anybody could have done it as long as they are fighting against Marcos. She was also considered full of integrity during her tenure; however, because of being unfit of becoming the president and incompetence to govern the nation, she let the people around her mostly her “Trapos” run the government. The overall thing that Filipinos have wanted the most is to get out of poverty. The country did not get any better when she was president. Multiple coup attempts that signify people are dissatisfied, they want to make another change. With Erap, he is unfit to become president. The only reason why he won the election due to his popularity. If you ask me weather you like it or not kung nandaya si GMA during the election, maybe it’s a good thing if not ang naging presidente ay si FPJ (bless his soul) who is another actor who is also unfit to be the president. Now, here we are again with Noynoy. The problem with Filipino voters, they are considered stupid voters. They vote for somebody who is popular. If Noynoy wins, within 2 years we will have another EDSA 3,4,5….. Wake up! Noynoy is unfit to be president. If you talk about integrity, he stood by and did nothing during the “Luisita Massacre”. If one of those farmers were your father who was killed, would you still support Noynoy? The question always remains, what did he do as a congressman and what did he accomplish as a Senator? He even failed to introduce a bill that have yet to make an impact to the people. Many had viewed Noynoy as he is merely an audience or spectator taking up space in the Senate. Attacking each candidate about there qualification and credibility is necessary to give people some insights who they are voting for. That is the way its being done in the US during election.
If you are one of those people of lost their jobs at Subic after the US pull out and suddenly more establishment and business came in because of Senator Gordon’s initiative. I think you will eat your own words. Gordon thus far is the most and the only qualified presidentiables deserve to win the next president.

may i just point out, that the point Gordon asked this is for people to realize what the Aquinos have done to help Tarlac grow after years in politics.. Like what he has done to Olongapo. And may I just stress that we’re talking about NOYNOY and his competence to lead. Not what Cory did.

Presidency is NOT inherited. It is EARNED.

  • anonymous says:

I totally disagree. Just because Corazon Aquino and Ninoy Aquino are people of integrity, it doesn’t mean that Noynoy is as well. We should stop defining people based on their roots. Just take GMA as a perfect example. And even if Noynoy is indeed a person of integrity, why do we have to settle? “Ah dito na lang ako, di kurakot.” Come on guys, we can do better than that. I have great respect for Corazon Aquino, and would give up the whole senate for a Ninoy Aquino. Having said that, I still wouldn’t vote for their son. Dick Gordon is what this country needs. Integrity, outcome, hard work & desire to uplift not only the Philippines but the Filipino values as well. Sabi nga nya, bawal ang tamad at lalong bawal ang tanga.

    • BURAOT says:

      mr anonymous,

you maybe right that integrity is not inherited. with that i am with you.

but on gordon? i beg to disagree. ang pinagba-bawal nya sa olongapo ay hindi tamad kundi yung ayaw sumunod sa patakaran nya. i happen to be from olongapo. at ang ayaw sumunod sa patakaran nya piunaaalis nya dahil hindi umano taga-olongapo at walang karapatan na magbigay ng opinyon at mas lalo nang kumontra sa patakaran nya.

he might be a good leader but another marcos in the making.

  • ren says:

cory and noynoy are the same.

cory is a great inspiration and restored democracy in our country
noynoy is surrounded by the all the hype and is perceived to be the “savior” of our country

cory is a squeaky clean image. to put it simply. she is not a corrupt official
noynoy is the same as her mother. definitely not corrupt

    BUT….

    after cory restored democracy..
    what happened in her term?

    same with noynoy.

    after he wins the elections..
    what now?

  • lina says:

opps Noy2 daw is not corrupt but how about the trapo’s on his team. same old politicos and same corrupt official na nagtatago sa kulay ng EDSA. They say na in politics ” walang free lunch” lahat maniningil in due time. Walan namang ginawa si Noy2 about the massacre during the terms of his mother and lalo sa Tarlac and how about the ‘Kamag-anak corporationb” that is the meaning of Freedom para kay Noy2 – to kill the innocent and the poor and they call it ” malinis sila”.

Noy is the product of ABS CBN na maraming pending case, still protecting thier own interest by supportint Noy2 and again, they call it freedom. Noy will be the preseident nag may mga pansariling interest hiding the color of EDSA and the memory of Cory.

  • Althea says:

dapat lang talaga malaman ng taong bayan ang bawat Kandidato lalo na ang mga presidentiables at Vice presidentiables. if you just really examine each one of them, who do you think is the most qualified to lead this ROTTEN country Philippine? let’s start with Aquino, they said, he is honest and he is not corrupt, but being honest and being not corrupt is not enough qualification to lead. he’s been a congressman and now a senator, yet how many bills had he passed? ok 5? so where did his 200 million pesos yearly budget go? your guess is as good as mine!… anak siya ni Cory at Noynoy, so what? what have Cory done during her term? to me, she was one of the worst presidents we had… most of all people need to remember that Noynoy is a TUTA of ABS-CBN (isn’t that obvious?) anong mangyari sa singil ng kuryente ng Meralco lalong lalo na sa kamaynilaan? chances are, tataasan at tataasan ang singil (andyan naman si Noynoy eh) kung hindi buwan-buwan, taon-taon, worst ay overpriced pa! he may not be corrupt now but who knows what happen when he assumes office at ang pera na mismo ang lumalapit sa kanyang mukha, (too much to resist) him, being a weak presidentiable? madali siyang lokohin at mabayaran, mark my word you guys at sabihin nyo na na akoy sinungaling kung hindi magkatotoo ang aking mga hula. PLUS ang Hacienta Luisita issues… think people and don’t be so stupid!

Noynoy is trustworthy but I want to vote for Manny. Insecure ako sa mga kaya pa niyang gawin once that he already became the President. Though I like also Noynoy to win, I am still wondering, anu nga ba ang mangingibabaw-accomplishments and good track records or integrity?

  • Rhoda crase says:

we will be voting for the next president who could lead us and has a political will. yes cory has done a great thing for us. but noynoy is not cory. i dont see the political will in noynoy during his terms as a senator compared to dick gordon. during his term in the senate, what has noynoy done to resolve the problem in hacienda luisita? that’s just a small community to manage compared to the whole country’s problems that he is to face if he won as the president. if a person cant do change in a small community, how much more for the whole country? so think wisely voters. gordon has proven himself capable of making a change in olonggapo city.
