Meet the writers: Jepoy

26 May 2009 21 Comments

jepoy-amacuJepoy is the co-founder of GameOPS, one of the oldest websites and the first website dedicated to video games in the Philippines. He was born in the early 80′s at a hospital in Tondo, Manila. A hospital where babies are normally born on the floors, luckily, he was one of the fortunate ones to be born on a chair. At 3 months old, he was brought to Quezon City where he lives until today.

He studied at Saint Claire School in Quezon City from pre-school to high school and has always been part of the top 3 in his class. Saint Claire School is also where Jepoy met his GameOPS buddies Rocky, Glen and fellow ka-barrio siete blogger, anonymark. They have been friends since pre-school.

Because of his proficiency in mathematics, he was given an opportunity to attend special advance math classes called POEM (Program of Excellence in Mathematics) at the Quezon City Science High School when he was in grade school. POEM is a once a week class sponsored by the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines and is still being offered to deserving grade school students. Unfortunately today, he cannot even perform simple addition and subtraction without using a calculator.

When he was in high school, his interests shifted from math and science to computers. He and fellow barrio siete blogger, anonymark developed a program written in BASIC for their school. They submitted this program to the school administration and was used during their Foundation Week. The program was developed via self study since their computer subject only tackled topics under Microsoft Office 97 and Windows 95. Besides, internet during that time was almost non-existent.

While still at high school, Jepoy and his friend/cousin Rocky founded GameOPS. It was the first Filipino website that catered to video game console gamers. As of today, GameOPS evolved to a blog and has been continuing to provide quality content to its readers.

After high school, Jepoy successfully passed an exam at the DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, Washington for a game design course but was eventually turned down since at that time, they’re not accepting foreign students. Frustrated, he followed his grandfather’s wish and took BS Electrical Engineering at the University of Santo Tomas. He and anonymark were supposed to enroll in BS Mathematics Major in Computer Science at UST, but anonymark decided to pursue a different path.

After two years, Jepoy shifted course and decided to continue his dream to become a computer scientist and video game developer. He transferred to AMA Computer University and got his bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering and his Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) license 3 years later. While at AMACU, he became the 5th president of its largest student organization, AMA microsystems. This is where he met his girlfriend and soon to be wife, Lalaine.

Today, he operates an online store business with Lalaine and now earns mostly through his blogs. Jepoy blogs about technology on his main blog— Captain’s Log, video games and other technology stuff at GameOPS, and posts pictures taken by his Nokia N70, Canon A510 and Canon A470 cameras on his photoblog, On Screen. He’s also one of the forum administrators of myGlobe and occassionally contributes to TechBlog.ph.

Jepoy hates n00bs but loves newbies, has an eidetic memory and used to memorize the entire periodic table of elements a few years ago, loves Star Trek, and strongly dislikes liars like this writer at FV (Clue: his name starts with J and ends with ESTER-IN-EXILE) and a British old geezer named Timmy. He also collects old video game consoles, so if you have an old Atari 2600 or 3DO, just send him an email. You can follow his daily activities through his Twitter and Plurk.
