Meet the writers: Yami

tagaytay_miriam_torrecampoYami was born in Bayanan, Muntinlupa (in April 30, 1970). Raised solely by her mother since they were left by her father even before she was born. Her grandmother and maternal uncle were the ones who helped her mother raised her. She had a half-sister, but she never considered her as a half-sister, rather a whole part of her life. She went to a public elementary school in Bayanan, Muntinlupa. She was enrolled to San Roque Catholic School in Alabang in high school, but only stayed in the same school for two years. Her mother could no longer afford to pay her tuition fee so she transferred her to Don Mariano Marcos High School (now San Francisco High School) in Quezon City. She may not be an A-1 student, but was lucky enough to be included in the list of top 10 students (in her section). She took Journalism at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in Sta. Mesa, Manila and graduated in 1991. The only organization she participated in was the Union of Journalist of the Philippines-PUP Chapter as the org’s secretary.

Officially, her first job was a stringer or correspondent of the Philippine News Agency in 1991, but quit after a couple of months, due to pressure from her first assignment, which was the Defense Beat. In January 1992, she was employed by People’s Journal, one of the publications of the Philippine Journalists, Inc. (then run by the government) as correspondent and became a regular employee six months later.

She had been to so many beats. Her first was the Central Police District, followed by the Department of Justice, Sandiganbayan, Ombudman, Supreme Court, Court of Appeals. She was later assinged to cover the Department of Health, Department of Science and Technology until she was retrenched along with hundreds of PJI employes in 2000 as part of the company’s cost-cutting measures. In the same year, she tried her luck to go back to PJI, this time through its broadsheet called Courier as correspondent. She was made to cover general assignments and wrote human interests stories. She was again assigned to cover the DOH beat, done a number of exclusive stories ranging from Internet pornography, People Living with HIV/AIDS, profile stories of different people from all walks of life, including inmates of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City and Correctional Institution for Women (CIW); and mental patients at the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) to name a few topics. During the surge of SARS cases elsewhere, she bravely went to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Alabang to do an interview with frontline health workers.

In 2000, her stories usually landed in the front pages of People’s Tonight. Her efforts were not left unnoticed, for in Oct. 2002, she was declared finalist by the Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) for Best New Coverage; that same year she was awarded Employee of the Year (Editorial Department) by PJI; the following year she landed third place in the 5th AIDS Media Awards for Best News Feature on Print. Two years later, she grabbed the Best Reporter of People’s Tonight in 2005.

Two years ago, she made a difficult decision in her life. She quit her job, thinking of using whatever funds that she can get in putting up a small business. She got nothing from PJI except the best memories of her job.

Today, she makes herself busy by blogging. Her site called Mom writes for a cause, was intially put up to serve as haven for all her exclusive stories. So far she was able to reprint some stories but there are a lot more for public use.

She is married to her devoted husband, who is currently employed at PJI. They’ve got two bubbly kids. She is proud of her kids because both are doing well in school.

She joined Barrio Siete to be able to share or be part of its cause.

    Miriam is gold.

It’s interesting that in Philippine journalism, there’s a wide array of news beats like defense and etc specific categories… unlike from the place where I make press release pimping, walang katorya-torya ang Middle East (it’s about the laws na rin kasi kaya may limitations). hahaha… makes me feel so small (in a good way) when I come to know such people like Miriam.

    Welcome!!!
