Nobel Peace Prize 2009: US President Barack Obama

Yes, you read it right. US President Barack Obama was awarded with the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for this year. In an article from CNN. com:
The first African-American to win the White House, Obama was praised by the Norweigan Nobel Committee for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”
“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said. “His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.”
You might be also wondering who have received this prestigious prize from Nobel aside from President Barack Obama. Here’s the list of winners that I have got from Huffington Post (let’s start in 1980):

When I first read this news online, I was surprised, perhaps shocked. I dont want to imply that US President Obama does not deserve the Nobel but I am more skeptic of the reasons why the committee have chosen him. Well, President Obama can be a Nobel nominee but not for now. His tenure in the White House, his foreign policies as well as domestic doings back in the US is somehow a little bit shy away from what Aung Suu Kyi, the 14th Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, and Mikhail Gorbachev have done. US President Obama remains a work in progress, he is still in the works and yes, I can see that he will become a Nobel nominee in the future.
Remember, the US and the rest of the world is still in the shambles of recession. President Obama havent made sweeping changes yet, except for the gargantuan stimulus funds that needed to jumpstart the ailing US economy.
I think this winning is some sort of a too-soon for US president Obama. I may share the sentiments with online peeps that maybe Morgan Tsangvirai, Prime Minister of Zimbabwe could have been a better winner for this award. Not to mention our very own Cory Aquino should have gotten the award too. Sad fact that she didnt got it during her time and if I am not mistaken, the committee does not give posthumous Nobel awards. Check what La Kapitana said in the comment thread below.
On a thought, it might be better to say that US President Obama should have won the Nobel HOPE prize because from what I have seen from the campaigns to the US elections, his candidacy inspired hope and blurred the lines of racism in the US. The problem is, there is no such thing as a Nobel Hope Prize. Anyway, it might not be far for US President Obama to win this award. I am just surprised that it came so soon.
Here is the announcement:

NGAK?!
I like Obama. I voted and campaigned for him.
Norwegians – they’re not fair.
Between OBAMA and CORY AQUINO, Cory should have won a Nobel Peace Prize and not Obama. I have no clue really and really surprised, aside from the fact that I just woke up!, could this be a nightmare? Ewan. It’s like…. WHAT?!!!!!
Aptly said Reynz.
I’d also prefer Tita Cory to have Nobel Peace prize kesa kay Obama. Its really too soon for him.
Andyan din ang other nominees na mas may significant pang nagawa kesa kay Obama. But I know naman na he can be a nominee in the future.
Ang aga masyado ng award na ito for him.
Cory with a Nobel Peace Prize? I don’t know what the Hacienda Luisita farmers who were gunned down fighting for what was rightfully theirs (according to your Tita Cory & her hypocritical CARP) would say about that… Don’t believe me? Read PCIJ’s Betty Go:
http://missgo.wordpress.com/2009/08/18/time-to-exhale/
The only thing she deserves credit for is having the courage to take up the cudgels for the Filipino people, but her husband laid the groundwork (really, everything – including his life) for it to happen. She’s still a selfish hypocrite though.
Among many of our faults, we are so enamored with the wealthy & the powerful that we forget how they got there in the first place. They got the hacienda from the government, then she signed into law what effectively should have turned their very own hacienda back into the hands of the people. Well, she didn’t… to this very day, even after farmers protested and ultimately gave up their lives fighting for something they should’ve already gotten, just like Cory’s husband. Some irony.
i am aware and i read stories about the Hacienda Luisita shootings – literally though, we all did not see Cory Aquino on the trigger, did we? much less proven that she ordered the killings correct?
and between Obama and Cory Aquinos – Cory has more solid accomplishment than Obama.
what Cory has done, giving you the freedom on this Earth is a much bigger picture and holds much more water – this is not saying that she was free to do what she did at Luisita – although nothing has been proven there. getz?
“Cory has more solid accomplishment [sic] than Obama” -Huh? I am no Obama fan, but what did Cory accomplish besides enriching her relatives, f*ing up nuclear energy in the Philippines, massive blackouts every f*ing day, etc… wait, surviving numerous coup attempts? Maybe surviving the resurgence of the NPA, MNLF, & MILF?
I know at this point it is arguable that Obama prevented/slowed the recession from getting worse, effectively put a doorstop on surging unemployment, passing the now imperfect Health Care reform… I know he has yet to follow through on all his promises and he still has to make a tough stance on other sensitive issues (i.e., same-sex marriage, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” marijuana legalization), but he has been in office for only a year.
Whoa J3prox.
Slow down dude. You cant be too sure that all Nobel Peace winners are perfect humans. No one’s perfect though.
Cory may have issues about the Hacienda Luisita but we cannot discount her contributions to our society.
Pray tell me, can name someone so perfect who could easily win the Nobel Peace prize? Dont stay stuck in your box though. You might get cabin fever dude.
Exactly! Masyado pang maaga. May nag-lobby din kaya dito? Charing! I think the other nominees deserved the prize compared to what Bam-Bam did. Hindi pa tapos ang efforts niya noh.
Anyway, congrats na rin kay Bam-Bam.
~ismid~
Hahah…taray ni Ateng Mel.
Marami pa ngang nominees na deserving for this year.
Umpf.

Obama! Obama! Obama!
He’s just sooooo good. Without doing anything, he got a Nobel Prize, who else can do just that but Obama?
Maybe now he can unite the whole world so we could get on to Armageddon just in time for 2012?
Hah!
Palagay mo Buraot, ready na ba tayo for 2012?
Hehehhe.
I agree. I think the award is too soon for Obama.
He might have broken the racial boundary but he still has not done something concrete yet for world peace.
