Noynoy Aquino and Shalani Soledad: the love story continues!

12 April 2010 14 Comments

This weekend, sobrang naaliw akong basahin ang comprehensive interview ng Manila Bulletin with the shy and unassuming girlfriend of leading presidentiable Noynoy Aquino. It’s none other than 30-year old Valenzuela City Councilor Shalani Soledad who’s running for reelection and looks so pretty, even with no make-up on. Sa article, malalaman natin ang little-known fact about how their love story developed and the girlfriend’s insight into a man who’s off and running as the future president of the Philippines.

Nakakabilib ang pagsuporta ni Shalani kay Noynoy kahit na di na sila masyadong nagkikita these days because of the rigors of the campaign. Sa ngayon, wala pa ring kasiguruhan na matutuloy sila sa altar. After all, wala pa yata silang two years mag-on? She strikes me as napakabait at pasensyosang dalaga. In a way maaawa ka rin coz she’s caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. Kung walang panahon si Noy sa kanya ngayon, what more kung ito pa ay maging Presidente? Mabuti na lang Shalani has her own political career to back her up.

Quotable quote from her:

“Seriously, the result of an election is not enough to be the basis of taking a relationship
to the next step. Kami kasi ni Noy, like any other couple, we have our issues that we are working on together. Hopefully, when the defining moment comes, we will be able to pass it successfully together.”

It helps that Shalani is the type of girl you’d be proud to bring home to mama. Noong buhay pa si dating Pangulong Cory Aquino, ilang beses na rin syang naka-attend ng family lunches ng mga Aquino. If you recall, Noynoy dated past showbiz personalities like the bold stars Barbara Milano and Diana Zubiri as well as newscasters  Korina Sanchez (now Mrs. Mar Roxas) and Bernadette Sembrano. Hmm, I wonder what went wrong with all those. Talagang pihikan kaya itong si Noynoy?

Back to their love story. Unang na-interview ni Shalani si Noynoy as a congressman way back in 2005. She was then a reporter for UNTV. Noon pa man, natandaan na sya ni Noynoy coz while everybody asked about the SONA, she asked about Kris Aquino na isa nyang idol. Forward to 2008: they would see each other again in a political meeting at a resto in Quezon City where Aquino is now a senator and she, a councilor. Natuloy ang meeting na ito sa Starbucks at phone calls and that’s how they became “on.”

It’s a good thing that Shalani gave us insights into Noynoy as a man: (take note, ang tawag nya kay Noynoy ay Noy)

“Si Noy, contrary to reports, cannot be easily swayed. This I have to tell you. He really is set in his own beliefs, na pag tama, tama. ‘Yun ang values kasi ni Noy eh. Walang grey area and hindi ka niya itotolerate.”

But what’s also nice about Noy is that before he makes a decision, he will try to consult each and every person involved. He will try to consider what you have to say and what the other side has to say also. But at the end of the day, he would decide based on his beliefs and based on sa pamantayan na ano ba ‘yung tama at ano ba ‘yung dapat. But he would get and try to listen to you and to the other persons’s side. ‘Yun ang maganda kay Noy. Hindi ‘yung dahil lang sa gusto niya at dahil lang ito ‘yung popular decision.”
