PART 1: The Great Panggagago ng mga TV Networks!

brand

TV probably is the most effective of all media in the Philippines. A significant number of Filipinos get their daily dose of information at any given time or circumstances as long as it is on air. Only TV has the power of immediate reach to geographically scattered country like ours.

From outside the country, I already detected a lot of anomalies of this type of media, what more kung nasa loob ka pa ng bansa? I hope these subtopics will educate us:

TV NETWORK WARS

The only source of revenue of television was through advertisements.

So bakit napasok ang usapang network wars?

During this part of the decade, nakikita nating nagbabanggaan na sila pag dating sa mga shows, mga talent na ginagamit, news format at documentaries. In my point of view, this two networks might have an agreement unbeknownst to the general audience and to advertising companies. The agreement was: MAG-AWAY TAYO, YAYAMAN TAYO.

What’s with the war?

Filipinos easily give their loyalty to brands, deep into their emotions (pati na rin chismis). Pag may gusto silang estasyon, pati simpatiya nila kasama na rin (atay, bituka, balumbalunan). Etong NETWORK WARS nabuo ito para paglaruan lang ang manonood at ipakita na they are both in pursuit of exellence to the people.

After all bayad sila!

But it’s apparent na Willie is up for a systematic na pangingikil. A national candidate holds a very big campaign budget (I have known this from a “tita” of mine who handled media budget for a senatorial guy).

So pag-nangyari yan, Wowowee will become more than a game show, but a campaign medium. Willie may not take sides but definitely will gain from all sides (kasi nandoon ang mga extra pera). Willie and the candidates are challenging the law in an ugly fashion.

Hindi ba panggagago yan?

2. TV Patrol - one of the forefront of the Filipino society’s public information is the evening news. News has become influential sa tao. In many ways they shape perceptions and helps one in decision making.

It looks like this war they engineered are catching up on them.

Another story, there was a time na nagdeclare si Pacquiao na ipapalabas ang recent fight niya sa ABS. Bulilyaso! Protektado pala ng kontrata ang kabilang kumpanya. Hindi pala tuloy ang paglipat sa ABS-CBN. Sa mga panahon na ito Pacquiao is any TV network’s goldmine! Everybody is on Pacquiao now.

a.) Noong napurnada ang paglipat, sabi nila: No hard feelings, well wishes sa fight, hopefully to work in another time (something in this line).

So later on paglapit ng ABS-CBN kay Pacquiao, they have reasons why Manny should sign up with them. Getting Manny on board with them on future fights/shows translates more: Pay-per-view money, product placements money, advertisement money, viewership share? More money!

Ang galing di ba?

O di ba? So ang nangyayari, these rent-seekers (a.k.a. TV networks) are gaining a lot of advertising money at the expense of panggagago of the society!

3. Maalaala Mo Kaya – is a drama based from real life stories. When Angel Locsin appeard on its episode of February 28 of this year. Her role was a daughter from a Barrio Siete who has great ambitions, enrolled and graduated with flying colors sa University of the Philippines. On the latter part of the show – Angel was having a job seeking turmoil, she ended up doing GRO stuffs. As a UP Summa Cum Laude, how come the character was not drafted at work or maintained in her internship?

O hindi ba, nagago ka na!

Just so you know, TV Networks are great thought manipulators!

To be continued…

yes ang tindi ng war ng ABS-CBN at GMA-7 dito. pag nag-uusap kahit saan, laging ang unang tanong: kapamilya ka ba o kapuso? there was a time nasa ABS-CBN ako tuned. then during the time of judy-ann’s kristala, lipat ako sa 7. then later naging baduy ang soaps ng 7, lipat ulit ako sa 2. these days, tuned in ang nanay ko sa 2, no choice ako!

  • lee says:

  • Glo says:

    ha ha ha!

Lee: sorry di ko masasagot yang tanong mo. ang pinapanood ko these days eh yung “Only You” sa kapamilya network.

    he he he.

  • jepoy says:

  • reyna elena says:

TV advertising, parang radio advertising lang yan John, right? Typically, the ratings game comes into play.

I’m not very familiar of course sa network wars sa Pinas although I think I read many years ago about the ratings was between these 2 stations. Of course, the more buzz, mas gusto nang advertisers.

It’s like here in the US in the radio biz, me tinatawag na Arbitron ratings, depende sa demographics and reach and everything. Pataasan nang ratings, the higher the ratings ganun din sa Pinas, the higher the ad rates. Minsan, bump pa nga ads mo pag me pumasok na big advertisers eh.

But this is provocative hahaha! I mean, who knows, that’s tough to imagine, manipulate and connive? hahaha!

    • johnonymous says:

True! Better ratings means a price command.

Dito sa USA kaya tayo may mga converter box iniimpose ng govt is not just to improve the picture quality. Also, having such, it accurately determines who’s watching what. The converter box, in a way, becomes a measuring device.

      Unfair industry practice.

      • Rob Angeles says:

Yes and I think this is how these 2 want things to be. Hard to control. If there’s no feud and happy ang lahat, parang walang excitement. Creating feud or industry war has been a long practiced strategy for many. You just can’t conquer a huge segment of viewers who have the same sentiments and loyalty, you need to divide them.

  • Zahiri2Death says:

Interesting points but a few glaring weaknesses that I’ll wish to point out.

Firstly, a weak plot line in MMK is hardly panggagago. It’s like saying biopics should be 100% accurate. It’s the Filipino viewers who are gago (i.e. weak of mind) if they insist on believing everything they watch. As for the quality of storywriting in the Philippine TV and cinema, that is another matter altogether.

Secondly, the format of our news programmes have resembled tabloid papers ever since our current VP became the voice of TV news. News on TV nowadays is so dumbed down and downright embarrassing. I grew up on RPN’s Harry Gasser. Now that’s how news should be delivered. So why did networks veer away from this formula and switched to sensationalizing news? Simple. Money. People watch it, they must provide it.

In other words, Filipinos have sh*t on their TV because of their own doing. So it’s not panggagago like you said, it’s pang-gago, i.e. targeted at the gagos in society. So if you watch it and enjoy it, you probably deserve it. If you think it’s total cr*p then don’t watch it.

    Go to youtube instead.

    • johnonymous says:

      @Zahiri2Death

      I think it’s unfair to:
      1. Use my last name to death as a commenter, hahaha!
      2. Generalize our fellow Filipino viewers as gago.

Filipino viewers are just there for the fun, they are just ready to get what’s on TV. It’s the media who are really to be called gago on the kinds of information aired.

In Philippine TV network industry, it is sad that the ugly practices are around, such as: manipulation, conniving, poor taste programs and bad news delivery.

I would say that if you ask a regular Filipino viewer, he/she will likely give you more crappy information about the shows they watched rather than giving you a better view about world news. It’s not fair to call them GAGO (or weak minded), they’re just underprivileged, unsuspecting victims — I truly believe they got brains too, you know!

  • dencios says:

  • Mahalia says:

that’s why watching too much tv is bad for you. I just read it last night that fiction writing industry is fading because of new media: internet, television, portable devices. It is sad that our culture is evolving. Media is entertainment, it does not convey the whole truth (if they do it is a rarity).

Fiction on the other hand is straightforward, it is an invitation to an escape to the imagination. At least the reader/consumer would not feel cheated.

  • nina says:

I have to admit kapuso ako – ayaw ko kasi sa channel 2. Pero I can stand not watching TV at all.

Totoo yan – kainis ang news, exactly how I call it – TABLOID.
