David Foster: The definition of a star

2:29

Listen to David Foster talking about Charice. According to him, when Charice was sitting with them, and there were 10 of them in the table at that time, she beams. And when she left, she was “gone’. Point emphasized on the word “gone”.

Charice talent is unquestionable. Her voice is powerful and she appears to appeal to adults and given that its easy to eschew older and not younger audience, they seem to be headed in the direction of making Charice music appeal to adults. That’s what David Foster was saying about Charice.

Listening to the conversation, I thought here was the problem. Charice continues to sing other people’s music and David Foster’s goal was to get her sing her own music and find her own niche. According to David, his sister James had identified about 20 songs written for Charice but it’s been a slower process that he had hoped for. Why? Because Charice lives in the Philippines and is going to school and with a side step remark mentioning her mother and that they don’t have access to Charice 24-7. (Note: There was no negative nor positive comment about the mother and I would like to point that out to warn detractors to be easy on the mother.)

When she exploded into the scene last year, she was big in America. I don’t know how big she was outside of America but I saw all those videos coming from Italy. I was hoping her 1st album would make a mark in the United States and I have not heard anything anymore. I was expecting to hear her music on the radio, but there were none, especially with the initial success of Note to God.

I believe that Charice is poised to truly become a very successful international singing star with some truly powerful battalion of supporters like David Foster, Oprah Winfrey and many, many more. Of course, it would be such a national pride to see her there. But the push to be successful and to want that spot must come from HER. From within her. And not from anyone else.

But still I kept asking myself…

Que pasa?!

Sayonara Charice?!

Napansin ko din kay Charice yan. Parang wala pa siyang solid identity as a singer kung palaging kanta ng ibang singers ang aawitin nya.

Honestly for me, she has the talent but she rarely stand out.

    • reynz says:

well, sinabi naman na sa interview and typically ganun naman sa start di ba. you don’t have your own song and yong sister nga ni David has already identified 20 songs daw kaso indi naman available si Charice sa kanila dahil parating nasa Pilipinas.

i read na she has an apartment dito sa US, curious lang ako why she is not giving time. ayaw nya ba? or ayaw nang kung sino? nanghihinayang lang ako dahil mabilis mainip ang mga kano.

      • Silver says:

Well reynz, she has to exert more effort if she wants to stand out sa international scene. Dami nyang makakaencounter. Baka maunahan siya ng mga koreano as koreans are making their way to the international music scene.

Hahahhaha.

        • reynz says:

          @silver,

i know! can Charice have that worldwide influence na parang Wonder Gurls na pati ako nalukring na nang kakasayaw dito, hanggang ngayon tabingi na lang paa ko di ko pa rin makuha?

so what is stopping her? pagod na ba sya? o baka naman na-inlove na sa tiga Pinas? hahaha

  • darbs says:

Charice stands out Among the Best.

Personally, for some reasons Charice touches me when she sings as if I am listening the first time.

Even the BEST AMONG THE BEST singers on earth as it is in heavens could not touch my HEART the way Charice touches my SOLID ROCK HEART.

She stands out already for me. And at least dozens of my American friends… and almost all the Fil-Am I’d spoken. For us she is the best among the best.

Not to mention by the way that she was invited by Oprah Show, Celine Dione’s concert here in Madison Square Garden, NY.

What about her Billboard ratings? The last time her’s was 100 in the billboard chart.

Let see… among ONE MILLION GREAT/BESTEST ARTISTS song hits and your song is in 100 top, that is something.

For me that is my simple definition why she shines…

  • tiyo paeng says:

    • darbs says:

      kulang siya sa height..

@tiyopaeng. ganoon ba? Ano ba ang talent na pinag-uusapan natin? NBA? PBA? Kung ganoon tama ka.

    • dencios says:

      hahahaha.

      hayup! tiki2?? hahaha

    • reynz says:

hahaha! wag naman height! discrimination na yan noh! height has got nothing to do with musical talent hahaha

      • Snow says:

What Charice need is a good packaging. A real knockout look/style through the help of Hollywood fashionistas.

Pero modesty aside…medyo kulang talaga siya sa height and there are commercialism kasi involved to succeed sa Hollywood eh.

        Take for example:

Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls. She is a half Filipina-Russian who has all the right package.

        Just thinking aloud po. :(

        • tiyo paeng says:

Snow, magagalit sayo si Darbs.. binanggit mo rin yung “Kulang siya sa height”. he he he

          • darbs says:

Hindi po pueding magalit. In fact, kabaligtaran ang sinabi mo tiyo paeng.

  • Mel says:

Maybe kelangan na niya ng new packaging or new PR. I still am positive na magkakaroon pa ng break si Charice. Keeping my fingers crossed pa rin.

    • reynz says:

i think this is a break for her to lose. eh ano kaya kung lumipat sya nang america para available sya parati pag tinawag sya ni David Foster? I mean, a lot of singers would want to be in her position na hinahanap ni David tapos indi naman pala sya available? what’s going on? di ba? so mukhang ayaw nya yata eh

  • darbs says:

    My take:

    Charice has her break already.

Nakapasok na po sya sa arena na walang ni isang Pinoy or Koreans na nakapasok talking about Foster’s influential music industry, Oprah’s Hollywood circles…

Ang problema as what reynz wrote is her availability.

James had identified about 20 songs written for Charice but it’s been a slower process that he had hoped for. Why? Because Charice lives in the Philippines and is going to school and with a side step remark mentioning her mother and that they don’t have access to Charice 24-7.

  • Ely says:

Hmmmm. I see nothing wrong with what David said. From a poor bariotic guy’s understanding, I think David was actually referring to Charice as a star. “She beams and when she left the room, you know she was gone; and that’s my definition of a star.” – Tingin ko ibig sabihin ni David dun, he felt her presence na pag-alis niya, ramdam na wala na siya.

But it’s true that Charice can’t leave the Philippines. I guess this is the downside of being so nationalistic. Babalik-balikan mo ang bansa mo and sacrificing the opportunities na sana napunta sayo if only you were there. But I’ve heard may gagawin siyang duet with David A. this December?

  • Pinoy says:

Charice has a big chance to be a superstar..on her young age she performed already in a several TV shows in U.S. which other young filipino singers didn’t experienced it yet.

I believe that Charice has a lot more opportunity, pero higit kailan man hindi niya maipagpapalit ang bansang kanyang pinagmulan…isa siyang makabayan..

  • darbs says:

@Pinoy…I know. We are just speculating here but I didn’t see that coming. You made a good point.

May nakita nga akong show nya sa youtube lately “Note to God” sa isip ko sana mga Madrigal Choral Group ung backup or at least Filipino Choral Group. Meron naman tayo di ba? Heto ung youtube Vid.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tOUuLj7wh0

  • Pinoy says:

Thanks for that link darbs.. i’ve watched it..

    Ang galeng-galeng..

Pwdeng pwede sa videoke bar ni Tiyo Paeng.. he he he

    • darbs says:

Pwdeng pwede sa videoke bar ni Tiyo Paeng.. he he he

      Here is my interpretation:

      saang category ba sa vidyokehan?
      yung pang Yoyoy Villame category?

      It is the majority’s call.

  • Neil says:

THe problem here is… she’s too much flaunting “Filipino” all over her perfs and TFC/ABS keeps on using her, marketing to, again, Filipinos abroad. Her latest album, so-called internationally released by Star Records has “this goes to all the Filipinos working/living/earning abroad kthnxbye” that so much delimits her to a miniscule audience. I hate to say this pero she has to stop saying anything Pinoy kung magpe-perform siya kasi magmumukhang nagpapalaki lang ng Asian audience si Charice for his real talents (read: Whitney).

Kasi ilang beses na siyang ininvite sa S. Korea for a set of guestings and live performances pero iniisnab niya. Feeling nila (ng kanyang management) kasi siguro, walang masyadong market sa Asia, particularly in S. Korea, Japan, and Mainland China. WHICH IS TOTALLY WRONG. Sayang, di niya alam na sumikat siya sa Japan for two months. Di nila nakita ang market dun. Japan has the second largest music industry in the world, China has billions of people in its mainland and other countries at ang mga Koreano ay loyal sa idols nila. Sayang.

Masyado kasi tayong mayabang. Iniisip kasi natin, Hollywood agad.

    • reynz says:

magaling ang sinabi mo. blog material. ang galing.

reason why i say that is because you touched on the very problem nang mga Pinoy artists na walang effort to make it big internationally nor cater to the worldwide audience.

i’m not saying it’s wrong. because if that’s what they are, that’s what they are. if that’s what it is, that’s what it is. it seemed to me na as far as pinoy talents are concerned, para bang – heto ang talent namen, like it or leave it.

whereas ang push nang South Korean pop is really tickle the worldwide audience taste and see if they could incorporate their local talent to have a global taste and boom! nakuha nila ang formula.

what they did was more like McDonald’s strategy nung lumabas ang McDo sa United States and went global.

it really boils down to Pinoy artists. alam naten talented ang mga yan. kaya nilang gumawa nang pangalan to make one Madonna or one Michael Jackson but i guess culture na naten siguro ang “pwede na yan!”

      what do you think?

  • Neil says:

*nagpapalaki lang ng Asian audience si David Foster for his real talents

    • reynz says:

and push lang ni David is that, he wants to create another blockbuster star. he wants another celine. another michael buble. another star and i truly agree with him na si Charice yon. besides, Charice has a story to tell. maganda ang story ni Charice that will endear her to Americans at maging role model.

yon lang nga ang nakikita ko, tipong walang effort na ata si Charice to really take on this opportunity. i am still wondering what happened ba.

      • darbs says:

@Reynz let the records show 15 Grammy awards lang naman. Nominated 44 times.

Foster has won 15 Grammy Awards (three for producer of the year) and has been nominated a total of 44 times. He has been nominated three times for an Academy Award for Best Song and won the 1999 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for the song “The Prayer” from the film Quest for Camelot sung by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion. He has been named BMI’s “Songwriter of the Year”.[15]

  • Glo says:

baka may kalokang kontrata si charice with abs-cbn? kung ako sya, kahit meron to hell with it. kasi sa kikitain nya sa US, barya nya lang bayaran ang breach of contract.

Note: Di ako ang nagsabi nyan, “Nag monkey see monkey do lang ako.”
