Ang aking adopted Barrio Siete sa Amerika is Philadelphia. Isang cosmopolitan na shoedad kung saan nagpirmahan nang Constitution nang Amerika. Im fak, sa First Amendment nang United States Constitution, mababasa mo to:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . .”
Ang phrase na to ang tinatawag na “separation of church and state”. Naniniwala ako na ang forefathers nang Constitution nang Amerika eh talagang uber-talino dahil 1802 pa na naisip ni Thomas Jefferson na magulo ang barrio pag pinag-halo mo ang recipe na to.
Church and state are like oil and water. They never mix at all. Yan ang aking paniniwala, kaya kami ni Benigno will never become BFF, kiver kung bigyan nya ako nang roundtrip ticket to Sydney (Melbourne si Benigno) to see my nephews. There are certain principles between these two that cannot be compromised or at least pagsamahin sa isang kwarto with the thinking they wouldnt end up in a sapakan, sabunutan, pana-an at saksakan. There was a time in the Philippines that we went to a state somewhat similar to an islamic republic. Tumaas ang kilay mo?! Ibaba mo. Although, hindi religion ng islam ang prino-promote nito, the format is almost the same. I am talking about the Spanish government during Benigno times. Fraylocracy is what we call it back then – the mixing of the church and state, walang bawang at sibuyas but having the principle that the voice of God is the voice of the people. O! divaaa! Parang divine assessment nang Ayatollah sa Iran election diva??? In my opinion too, it was also used as a way to convert our forefathers into Christians. Kumbaga, if you do not convert with us, you are considered as pagan or outcast from the state. Ako hindi na-convert. Iba ang sinasamba ko.
So, the Spanish authorities back then were utterly powerless to the archbishops and the Popes. Do something wrong in their eyes at hindi ka lang male-lechehan kundi chugi ka na and you will receive one sampal excommunicado. Or these officials can be sent back to their motherland and stripped them off, of their briefs err riches (read: assets) at hayaang matigok na purita.
That is how fraylocracy is – the mixture of church and state powers. It never worked, honestly for the people. Kahit na sabihing makadiyos chorva eklavu ka pa, it won’t work. Porqua? Eh kasi nga kurapsyon exists kahit saan talaga. Ever. Basta’t nademonyo at naging gahaman sa kapangyarihan, kesyo may suot kang abito at krusipiho, o kahit na damit emperor na bigay ni Benigno, talagang lalamunin ka pa rin nito.
Anong result? Dahil sa mga pangaabuso na ito e yun ang naging mitsa for the Philippine revolution of 1896. Di nakatiis ang ating mga forefathers sa mga pangaabuso na ito (kulang ang blog natin para i-enumerate lahat… hahaha).
Anyway, ibalik nyo ang TV Channel sa RNN (Reyna News Network) at watashi ang modern-day Iran. Although may pagkakaiba sa religion, it still has the basic backbone which is fundamentally the mixing of church and state powers. Ibig sabihin, walang laban kahit si Ahmadinejad. Napansin nyo? Silent ever ang lolo nyo? Dahil kasi, once na nagsalita si Ayatollah Khameini na bakla ka, bakla ka talaga! Kumbaga, his words must be reverred at sambahin ever ang sinasabi nang Ayatollah. He’s got the final answer. Getz?
So, bakit ako nakatutuk sa happening in Iran? My appreciation comes from the fact that this is a test of the marriage of the church and state powers as well as a test of the separation of the church and the state. This is a test as to whether or not, my adopted American forefathers were right after all. That you must never mix the two. And I predict that the fundamentalist will do whatever they can to preserve the status quo, kahit dumanak man ang dugo.
Because I know that there is something wrong with this so-called “divine voice” that legitimizes an election. I truly believe that it should be through popular support. My simple formula says: Election = Popular Support. Otherwise, sintunado voices ang dating.
