Sisterettes faces lashing in KSA

21 June 2009 28 Comments

In every country, state, province, city, county, there are  laws, rules and regulations  that need to be followed. Laws that are similar in some ways, but there are some that are uniquely their own. Laws that if we violate, we pay the consequences. Even here in Barrio Siete, La Kapitana has some rules to be followed in the Barrio, othewise, we’d all be banished in the Sitio.

Yeap, you heard it right. They went to a party dressed in drag. Eh mabuti kung sa Pilipinas to. Here, you can even go to a basketball game in drag. Gaya nga nitong nangyari sa Barrio nina Mandaya Moore. Merong silang pa-basketball. Pugad Baboy versus Pussycat Boys.

Here’s the link and article from Agence France-Presse via ABS-CBN news:

RIYADH – Sixty-seven Filipino men working in Saudi Arabia face jail and lashes for “imitating women” after being arrested at a party in which a number were dressed in drag, a Philippines embassy official said Saturday. Riyadh police arrested all 67 men at a private party and drag show in a resort villa near Riyadh on June 13, Philippines embassy Vice Consul Roussel Reyes told AFP. “They had alcohol and some were dressed up like women,” he said. Both drinking and cross-dressing are forbidden under Saudi Arabia’s conservative Islam-based sharia laws, and both could bring up to six months in prison and lashes. None were charged with homosexual acts, a much more serious charge under Saudi law, Reyes said. The men have all been released to their employers while formal charges are drawn up, he added. Some one million Filipinos work in Saudi Arabia.

Sigh.

So depressing.

Sabi nga eh, “Ignorance of the Law excuses no one.”

I have a friend, Gene, na galing nang Saudi and he has a lot of stories to tell. Reader sya here and iisa pa lang ata ang comment hehehe and I’m glad indi nang drag ang loka in Saudi.

I think, ang tendency kasi nang mga Pinoy when in foreign land, alam mo na, mag-sa-sama sama which always is the case, mag-paparty which always happen and that sense of comfort minsan nakakalimutan na they’re in foreign land with completely foreign customs and traditions sa Pinoy. Akala nila, once na they’re with groups of Pinoys, exempted na sila.

    Now they know.

Then again, we’ve heard and read these stories over and over.

      • reynz says:

my nephew worked as a nurse in Riyadh at lumipat sya nang UAE dahil nga hinahabol sya nang mga Arabo. i was told na mahilig daw ang mga lecheng to sa maputi at makinis and that was my pangkin. so nung nag-bakasyon sa Bicol, indi na bumalik. he’s not gay. me asawa tong pangkin ko. kaya lang mana sa lola, guapo. hehehe.

      • dencios says:

A friend got arrested and he was just in a simple tee and jeans. His hair though is a short bob, his eyebrows are plucked and he wore a sheer lipstick.

Bottomline is never to take chances talaga. Dress and behave appropriately. Irespeto natin ang kanilang batas, kultura at religion.

  • Mars says:

mahigpit talaga ang batas nila dito sa ME tungkol dyan, dito nga sa oman, ayos sa kuwento, binababaon daw hanggang ulo yung tao at binabato hanggang mamatay.

    • reynz says:

      Mars,

Here’s the link of one movie that garnered awards at the Toronto Film Festival

      http://www.thestoning.com/

Based on an incredible true story, this powerful tale of a villages persecution of an innocent woman becomes both a daring act of witness and a compelling parable about mob rule. Who will join forces with the plot against her, who will surrender to the mob, and who will dare to stand up for whats right. It is both a classic fable of good and evil and an inspiring tribute to the many fighting against injustice around the world.

I couldn’t imagine the reaction of these RELIGIOUS FANATICS when they come to America and visit Lower Manhattan especially in SOHO where same sex are kissing lips to lips in broad day light.

And/Or watch the Sisterettes Parade in Jackson Heights, NY.

    And/Or get married.

I guess, since they could not do anything, these RELIGIOUS FANATICS are going to lash themselves or stone themselves maybe even hang themselves!

Now you wonder why they hate our guts here in the United States of America.

But don’t worry you Fanatics, you have counterparts here in the U.S. They are the Christian conservatives. Thanks goodness we have separation of church and states.

If not then these X-tian Conservative Fanatics will crucify the sisterettes.

In Visayan i should say ang mga bayot ila giod nga ipanglansang sa Krus ug paga purong purungan sa maidlot nga mga ulok.)

    • Silver says:

And to think na sobrang epokrito ni Haggard.

Well, para walang gulo i agree with Mel

Bottomline is never to take chances talaga. Dress and behave appropriately. Irespeto natin ang kanilang batas, kultura at religion.

  • mel beckham says:

Char

  • dfish says:

Mel, there’s a common ground here between your post and Capitana’s latest post on Iran – both thrived (or is it enslaved?) on extreme fundamentalism. Related don sa post ni An2nette, a woman who gave birth out of wedlock will be lashed 100 times after giving birth. And homosexuality? Needless will we discuss that it is a sin…

    • dencios says:

  • roni says:

nakuu, blueb, dati, nung di pa ako nakakaalis, iba talaga ang tingin ko sa mga arabs (not necessarily muslims) but now, naintindihan ko na. It’s just a matter of R E S P E C T. We are very quick on judgement pero when we put ourselves in their shoes, it’s a big OUCH! e.g. ikaw na ang tumira sa desyerto for a thousand years, what will it make you?

    • reynz says:

      @roni,

i’m sure with you living and/or looking from the inside, alam mo sila at kilala mo sila firsthand.

and i agree that there is a lot of misconception, like in the case of Iran insofar as like – democracy is concerned dahil sa totoo lang, yong nabasa ko sa Time Magazine was telling me na they are actually very democratic and that’s the reason why they have this huge demonstration.

now, in terms of barbaric punishments e.g. stoning, hanging, lashing… they have never catch up in times. those are inhumane and i for one don’t understand why they continue to have these types of punishments. di ko talaga maintindihan.

is it because they have to have this maximum and intolerable punishments dahil tugma eto sa mentalidad nila given na andyan sa kanila ang mga extreme and uber-extreme fanatics?

    • Silver says:

Agree ako sa sinabi mo Roni.

It is just a matter of respect talaga and konting dagdag sa pangunawa.

Hindi ako naniniwala na may perfectly civilized na kultura – every culture has its own sets of flaws and advantages.

What appears alien and gruesome or even kadiri to other people e normal lang para sa iba. It does not mean to sound apathetic pero there is a strong tendency towards generalization kasi – like for example, the muslims, homosexuals or atheists.

Tama din ang sinabi ni Glo at Mel na to keep it safe, just do what Romans do in Rome di ba?

  • roni says:

is it because they have to have this maximum and intolerable punishments dahil tugma eto sa mentalidad nila given na andyan sa kanila ang mga extreme and uber-extreme fanatics?

Exactly! pero don’t blame it to the fanatics, blame it on the weather!

    • reynz says:

hehehe! naniniwala ako na alam nila ginagawa nila on what kind of punishment apts as to what kind of crime, eh kaso yong mga nababasa ko, eh eto ngang stoning, di ko masikmura and what i said about they have not catch up with times is that barbaric pa rin sila esp sa women at petty crimes in the eyes of the west tapos ang punishment eh uber. pero mahabang discussion to at tipong di tayo magkakaintindihan.

gaya nga nang sinabi mo, sa New Orleans me saging, sa Philly wala.

  • Glo says:

mercy killing yata tawag nila dyan. pag nagdala ng kahihiyan ang babae sa pamilya nya, then she will be killed.

yes…when u are in rome, do what the romans do. to e on the safe side.

    • roni says:

let me emphasize this: Arabs, not necessarily muslims.

  • darbs says:

I just want to remind everyone that here in America specifically New York City, homosexuality had been criminalized.

Police would arrest you and put you to prison.

There was even report that gays were beaten.

Again being gay was used to be illegal in the United States of America.

    Some facts:

    1962
Illinois becomes the first state in the U.S. to decriminalize homosexual acts between consenting adults in private.

    1969
The Stonewall riots transform the gay rights movement from one limited to a small number of activists into a widespread protest for equal rights and acceptance. Patrons of a gay bar in New York’s Greenwich Village, the Stonewall Inn, fight back during a police raid on June 27, sparking three days of riots.

    1973
The American Psychiatric Association removes homosexuality from its official list of mental disorders.

    1982
Wisconsin becomes the first state to outlaw discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

@ Silver – naku Silver, maraming ganyan dito. Mag nagmamaganda, akala mo eh pinakamasama ng maging baklush. Yung iba nga diba, ki-no compare ang homosexuality sa beastiality.

Back to the story, oo nga – sana naman mga sisterette – ingat kayo diyan. When in Rome.. blah blah.. para ligtas kayo sa mga chorva. All the best sisters!
