So what’s wrong with Boy Abunda?

5 June 2010 3 Comments

You cannot blame the public having been with showbiz personalities in the government like Lito Lapid, Bong Revilla, Joseph Estrada and a host of other showbiz blunders. Fact is, showbiz personalities going into politics is met with a very negative perception. It’s automatic for the public to scoff at showbiz personalities going into politics.

Unfortunately, it’s a reality that showbiz people have to deal with. It’s an stereotype that is already attached to showbiz personalities. It’s even worse for gay people having been maligned by both the Church and the Comelec. Important government position will be very difficult for gay people to have.

Who’s at fault for the very negative public perception and the stereotype? It’s the Church. It’s the Comelec. It’s the showbiz people. And yes, it’s the public for buying the nonsense.

But showbiz people have some work to do. It’s they who should clean up their acts also and not use their popularity into politics. Remember Ara Mina with her disaster interviews? Remember Richard Gomez with his Presidential vs. Parliamentary debate blunder answers? At least Ai-Ai is doing her assignment. Will that change the public perception? It’s too early to say but let’s see.

THERE’S NOTHING WRONG with appointing a show biz celebrity to a Cabinet position, according to Gabriela Rep. Liza Maza.

Maza came to the defense of television host Boy Abunda, who had endorsed the lawmaker in her recent Senate bid, rapping critics who scoffed at the idea of an entertainer becoming a public official.

“Mr. Abunda deserves respect and not below-the-belt criticisms. Branding him as a mere entertainer incapable of doing serious government function is an unfounded and disrespectful remark,” Maza said in a statement.

There’s nothing wrong with him. I would prefer someone with executive experience but on the other hand, it would be refreshing to see someone like Boy in the cabinet who’s not a career bureaucrat and won’t steal.
