The Devil Wears Prada!
I was talking to one of my boylets in Tiwi, Albay the other day. He gave me the news. My other boylet na binilhan ko nang pridyidir is now an OFW in Dubai. Huh?! Eh dahil kilala ko yong nangutong saken… “Tatagal ba yun dun?!” sabi ko. Eh kasi nga, first it was Kotsengkuba who told me he’s had it and decided to go home after working for so many years in China. Then, it was my nephew who said, he is so tired with his Arab employer in Saudi. He’s back in Bicol and is not planning to fly back. Then, it was a friend who works in New York for one of the big 4 accounting firms who just phoned me and said its quits for her. All because of “Doreen”. I remember my own moments… with Doreen.

The Devil Wears Prada! Remember that movie? Merryl Streep brought workplace bullying to us in big screen. Over at reyna elena dot com, I call those bosses “Doreen”.
We all ran across all types of “Doreen’s” in our life. They love to bully us. They love to manipulate us. And they love to run around that all the credit are theirs. They love that we would succumbed to their power trips. They say “I suggest…” but in reality they meant “Follow me, or else!” I’ve heard this many, many times in my work.
Of course, Doreens of the world understand the mechanics of bullying because they know the difficulty of finding another work. The more they seem to appear during periods of recession. I pity the working women who deserve flexible working hours. They will forever be pasted following the traditional standard working hours.
I hate bullies. Of any types. Sizes and shapes, old or young, blacks or whites and all the browns in between. But, in my experience, good managers are those that motivates, inspires and engages staff. This typically brings out the best out of them. Who wants to work with a dictator? But it’s different at work. It’s almost like communism. Drawing the line is easy. Doreen’s the boss.
But does most of you would rather prefer a relaxed leadership style as opposed to one that is one of control and demand? How do you deal with bullies at work?
P.S.
Follow-up entry will touch characters at work.

I suggest we carry an ammunition and shoot the living daylight out of these so called Doreens. There’s NO OTHER WAY!
litsi oo! hahaha! ayoko nyan! marami pa akong susus-tentuhan no! hahaha!
I love the movie.
The truly insightful managers are the ones who, rather than horde the work, would delegate and teach his/her staff to the point that they can function as a team autonomously without said manager’s close day-to-day supervision. Under such a manager, staff would be given responsibility and authority to resolve issues on their own using their own better judgment and escalate only by exception.
A lot of managers are uncomfortable with this and prefer to be seen as a go-to person for any issues/challenges his/her staff may encounter. Being a control freak (the opposite of what I described in the 1st paragrpah) is in itself a form of bullying.
Naku reynz, nakaparami talagang corporate bully.
tsk..tsk..tsk…
its a matter of respect lang para sa akin.
