The Fremont Street Experience – Las Vegas

8 July 2009 46 Comments

Freemont St. – 1952

Fremont 1952

Long before  luxurious casinos such as the Bellagio, Caesar’s Palace, The Venetian, MGM, Mandalay Bay sprouted in the so called The Strip or Las Vegas Boulevard – there was Fremont St, the downtown Las Vegas. The Sin City started in this street in 1925. It has been the site of numerous “firsts” in Las Vegas – the first paved street, first Nevada gaming license, first traffic light and first elevator. Locals say that Fremont was the original Vegas not the modern Vegas that most people know – see picture below.

The Strip

However, when the world’s largest casino and hotel properties took over a street now called The Strip in the 1970′s and 80′s, Fremont lost its spark. The Strip is a a 3.1 mi or 6.1 km stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard south of Fremont Street. It is the home of modern, high-rise and famous casinos and hotels of the world. The number of tourists started decreasing in Fremont. Business was bad. It somehow became a ghost town.

The owners of the casinos and hotels of Fremont St gathered together in order to find a strategy that would draw tourists back to Fremont. Indeed they found a smart solution, the Fremont Street Experience (FSE). FSE is a five-block pedestrian mall. It is the home of the famous light and sound show which is presented nightly beginning at dusk until midnight.

Fremont 2

What is this light and sound show?  In 1995, the light show was made of 2.1 million light bulbs which were controlled by 32 computers. The suspended speakers were rated 355,000 watts. The casinos of Fremont, with the help of  Las Vegas City ( Fremont St is considered a city park) spent $70 million for this. An upgrade worth $17 million was done in 2004 and was also sponsored by LG Electronics. The 2.1 million incandescent bulbs were changed to LED display and is now controlled by 10 computers.  Imagine a 1500 ft by 90 ft LED display with 550,000 watts sound system? Reynz, you really missed this one – gutom at pagod na kasi tayo non!

Do you want to experience the Fremont Street Experience? Watch this short (very) video taken by moi:

The title of the show is A Tribute to Queen (the band). They feature different artist/music every quarter, I guess. And by the way, this show is totally for free – no entrance fee whatsoever – just don’t gamble and you are good. :D

  • dencios says:

one of the places na gusto kong marating.

di ko mawari kung outdoor or indoor iyan. malamang indoor. kung naging success iyan para maka-attract ng tao e palagay ko na tama ang strategy nila.

tanong: puede ba ang food while gambling? :)

    • Reesie says:

outdoor yan denz. yung isang buong street nilagyan ng roof at doon ang show.

puede magdala ng food while gambling tapos libre pa drinks… kaya madaming lasing sa vegas because if you gamble kahit ilang basong laklak ang gusto mo pwede mong inumin. :D

Sin City keeps re-inventing itself due to world-wide competition. everywhere you go there’s a new casino burgeoning; from moscow to macau, from alberta to australia, and from shanghai to monaco, all over the globe there’s casino; only after your hard earned dollars, dinars or euros.

it just a matter of time before the halpless economy get stretch out in the game of chance (of misery).

tama, magsungka na lang kayo sa baryo.

    • reynz says:

Las Vegas is an a business that could easily be copied and be excellently better presented that Las Vegas, that’s what Macau is doing. For as long as one has the re$ource$, there’ll be one bigger, better and fancier “Las Vegas” and that’s the challenge. They’re in a business that is highly competitive. The beauty about this is that, the best of competition comes out, the best of the best, ingenuity and creativity. And anyone who comes out as the 800lb gorilla will certainly swallow the competition. Alive.

        • jeri says:

Sa tingin ko nga kapitana mukhang nag-enjoy ka husto. lol! at mabuti kamo at harmless naman sila kundi baka pinagsamantalahan na ang nag-iisang rosas sa gabing yun.. bwa ha ha ha.

          • reynz says:

haha! that’s the re-invention that Jim was talking about and that’s where Las Vegas has an edge on some other “Las Vegases” that are sprouting around the world on how to magnet these types of performers aside from big named stars and shows.

          • Reesie says:

Reynz, hindi mo tlga nakalimutan ang first lab mo noh? Madala nga dito si mama ko. Hahaha
