Vancouver Olympic Opening Ceremony: Raising alibis

14 February 2010 15 Comments

Ok. Ever since I outed myself supporting Noynoy Aquino for Philippine Presidency, I’ve earned the ire and hatred of a lot of Filipinos. Well, this time around, I have to prepare, because Canadians will hate me this time. Why?

OLY-2010-OPENING

Did you watched the Vancouver Olympic Opening Ceremonies?

One word. Boring. I mean, really. Achingly boring.

At first, I thought I was watching cartoons. Then there was this guy who was like a preacher. Oh! And KD Lang with her/his Allelujah! I was confused if I was watching the Olympics or a Prayer Rally. Boy, that KD Lang song, I could hear Simon Cowell… “Hideous! Boring and forgettable!”.

For me, one of the most unforgettable and simply exciting opening ceremonies were that of Beijing and Australia. Until now, no one can beat Australia’s lighting of the cauldron. There was this aborigine athlete in the center of – I think that was water – touched the water with the Olympic torch and boom! That was beautiful!

Last night, in Canada… technical glitch?! eekk! I could understand having that technical difficulty in Philadelphia. You see, we still have about 14,000 homes without power because of the blizzard right. Well, one of the Olympic cauldron did not lit. Have they paid their electric bill? I don’t know.

Forget about the glitch. One athlete died during practice, Nodar Kumaritashvili. And according to the officials who will soon be facing lawsuit said that “there was no indication that the accident was caused by deficiencies in the track, the International Luge Federation and the Vancouver Olympic Committee said in a joint statement. Wow, I wonder how this investigation will end up?

I don’t understand really, an amateurish ignorant like me – simple risk management tells me that there should be some safety net around the luge area instead of metal barriers! And if you’re running at 90 mph, it’s a disaster. And at the opening ceremony, all they could give Nodar was 1 minute of silence. That’s it.

Ok. Ok. Around this time, I should be called monkey, imbecile and terrorist for really writing about what I think about last night ho-hum show. But I thought I was short-changed.

I love the Olympics and I always wait anxiously what’s new and exciting. You see, Vancouver is the best place on Earth to live. Even nature gave them the best and the people there managed their environment excellently and I was expecting the best. Too much to ask? This is the Olympics, right? Do we expect mediocrity here? No. We expect high heavens beyond Mt. Everrest good. Yeah, that good.

Blame me for being pampered by the Australians and the mind-boggling performance of the Chinese in the Beijing Olympics. Canada didn’t seem to get it right and Olympics is supposed to showcase the best of all the best.

Of course, some are saying that Canada is not Beijing, that this was an “intimate affair”?! Huh?! “Intimate”?! Intimacy as in sex? Sexual affair? Orgies you mean?! These people are nuts coming up with some ridiculous alibis!

In my revered oh-lala opinion, Canada has all the time in the world to prepare for the best that they could offer the world and they didn’t. Don’t blame Beijing for coming up with such a great Olympic Opening ceremony that will probably be very hard to replicate.

What Beijing did was raise the bar. What Canada did was raise alibis.

I find the Olympic torch ceremony a blahh… Whoa, torch malfunction? No offense meant but I think Canada can do better than that.

I agree it was super duper unforgettable. :(

  • reynz says:

hehehe i guess it was my fault for expecting too much from the canadians. besides, they fight for hosting the olympics tooth and nail, grabe makes me think na this was just purely out of business and not really sports, culture and art because it seemed to me they just want to host the olympics per se para tourists can dump their dollars in canada

    FYI non Google users…….

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic opening ceremony creators are BOTH incredible Australians. America used them too!
Australians, David Atkins and Ignatius Jones were the producers for the Vancouver Winter Games 2010 Opening ceremony…. I repeat!
They also produced our 2000 Olympic Games opening ceremony in Australia which I attended. We also had a tech glitch when Cathy Freeman had to wait for a LOT longer (soaking wet I might add after walking through a waterfall ) then the Great One (Gretzky) did. But we Australians just held our breath and everything turned out great! The most memorable torch lighting ceremony in Olympic history. In fact our games remain to this day the best Olympics in modern times.
And just like we great Canadians held our breath and we are just thankful both torches were lit successfully!

    @ snow- I think you mean “forgettable”dear…..

and Reyna- Please educate yourself man. You know nothing of which you speak.

This was pathetic and rude if you ask me- USE YOUR GOOGLE DUDE!

Canada along with Australia are the best countries in the world mate.
Your comment was really “dumbed down” and learn to use caps lazy ass

    Get real mate!

    • reynz says:

so what exactly are you telling me Brian?!

creators of Australian Olympics = creators of Canada Olympics therefore both are excellent? since you won’t stop your name calling, i think you’re a dumb fuck ass Brian, just where did you get that idea that just because Australian Opening nite was great and so therefore Vancouver Opening nite MUST be great too because they have the same creators? Don’t you think you need to educate yourself on your moronic reasoning?

get real dumb fuck ass reasoning mate!

    • Mel says:

I agree that the lighting of the cauldron is UNFORGETTABLE.

      UNFORGETTABLE KAPALPAKAN. I totally laughed.

      Hahahaha!

      • Snow says:

@Brian – Sorry Kuya, ‘unforgettable’ kapalpakan talaga siya sa akin. Imagine, Vancouver Olympics ‘Lighting Ceremony’ will go down to the history as one of the worst one.

        Di ba, unforgettable yun? *wink*

  • gus says:

i agree, that opening ceremony was just so boring. i thought i was in a church. i didn’t expect them to match what China did but this one was so disappointing. it was so blah, no excitement at all.

  • Mel says:

But I disagree on some points. I think kd Lang sang Hallelujah beautifully.

Flag bearers were also not recognised. It would’ve been better to see their names on screen especially the super goodlooking flag bearers from Belgium, Belarus ang Hungary. Hahaha!

    • reynz says:

sorry mel hahaha, i was waiting for KD to give it some umpt like i kept waiting

i feel sorry actually for – was it Azerbaijan who i believe, in between the US and Canada, i thought that was not right dahil nasapawan sila

also, wala bang rep ang Pinas kahit isa?

      • Mel says:

Ate Reynz, wala dahil I think hilaw pa ang Pinas to join the winter olympics. Siguro ayaw gumastos ng gobyerno. Sa tingin ko lang ha. Hehehe

But I know there are very good figure skaters out there. Pang world-class ang dating but not up to par with the current leaders in the said event.

The Vancouver Olympic opening could have been better in terms of avoiding glitches and also in preventing the unfortunate death of the Georgian athlete I agree. The opening show aimed to include the different Indian tribes as well as the French and English aspects of Canada and show the width and breadth of what Canada is which is the second largest country in the world so you can imagine the scale. While it did not have the flash, it had soul. You have to live here to appreciate/understand the sometimes quirky, laid back and sentimental nature of Canadians but which also allow them to foster a variety of singing styles and talents proof are world class talents like J Mitchell of Both Sides Now fame, poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen who was just given a lifetime achievement at the Grammy awards and who wrote Hallelujah, rocker Brian Adams and Diva Celine Dion. Hallelujah was sung as a prayer for Nodar Kumaritashvili who sadly died in the accident. The Olympics also reminded me of beautiful places I still have to see in Canada such as the Aurora Borealis or the Northern lights in Yellowknife up in Northern Territories which Japanese tourists come in drove to visit for good luck. My husband said there are Japanese signs in the restaurants and also you would be surprised, lots of OFW workers in the fast food chains up there. I agree with you Vancouver is so beautiful and breath taking I already decided I will retire there someday in the island with a view of the Pacific to remind me Philippines is on the other side of the ocean. They have the best Chinese restaurants in the whole world apparently which is a plus and also lots of Filipino restaurants too. For those who liked Hallelujah, this is my favorite version by Lisa of Dutch X Factor. Alexandra Burke’s version was nice too.

In fairness, I love the following: The dolphins ‘swimming effect’ and the acrobatic acts.

  • Keith says:

I live in Vancouver. Those ceremonies were totally boring. Ostentatious. UnCanadian. Honestly I couldn’t believe how boring it was. The ads were more entertaining. Canada is a great country with interesting people and places. Don’t let the opening ceremonies deceive you. By the way, I did a search of KD Lang because she reminded me of Wayne Newton. Turns out I am not alone.
