“Voters do not vote for good governance”

3 February 2010 12 Comments

And so Noynoy Aquino and Manny Villar are now statistically tied based on the latest Pulse Asia survey. I’m disappointed to see Noynoy’s ranking went down, then again, understand that there’s no denying that Manny Villar’s basura advertisement worked.

Previous to the Pulse Asia results, the latest SWS Survey results have it that, Aquino at 42%, Villar at 35%. It’s now down to 7% and Villar camp sees it as within striking distance. Now, understand that the inclusive dates as to when the survey was conducted was January 21 to 24, 2010.

It is obvious that the barrage of TV ads by Manny Villar is working. Consider this. The Villar camp has the highest number of TV ad minutes.

sws 2010 3

Now, if you look at Noynoy’s 32 minutes of TV ads, that’s paltry compared to Villar. I kept thinking, were the Noynoy camp went over confident that the Villar camp will never catch up to their original 60%? I do hope they’re not sleeping. It’s only now that they’re acting when the numbers became even. La-la-la?

But what does this mean? Well, to copy that line from our notorious resident here, it’s that simple really.

Manny Villar is definitely connecting with the people with his ad campaigns that are simple, direct and good recall. Admit it, it has an LSS effect. Forget about the fact that the ads do not even answer the “how’s” but it delivers. I give their campaign manager credits for doing a good job.

But what baffles me is the fact that (maybe) Pinoys have not really changed after all these years from suffering through some blatant in your face corruption and just plain bad governance! You see, CHANGE will not happen if people don’t want to change! I guess in their minds, nothing is broken. ~roll the Ampatuan video please, then insert NBN/ZTE; fertilizer… In one, in two… Winnie Monsod your turn on C5 please…~

Which is why, it is pretty disappointing to read that according to a recent government study by National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), voters do not vote for good governance – and Noynoy Aquino was banking on Good Governance! This is bad. Really bad.

I honestly don’t know what to make of this. We were ravaged by the unimaginable corruption under the Marcos regime. Rampant corruption continued under the Estrada administration. And as if this is like a run for the Guinness Book World Records of Thieves, the Arroyo administration’s list of alleged corruption is just beyond imagination! So if you have leaders acting with impunity, what do you expect on the local level then?

Just take a look at this: According to a top official of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB),

In 10 provinces that the NSCB identified as “worst-governed” in 2005, eight of their governors were still reelected in 2007, Virola said. The NSCB survey in 2005 listed the 10 “worst-governed” provinces as

  • Maguindanao
  • Camarines Sur
  • Masbate
  • Lanao del Norte
  • Zamboanga del Sur
  • Surigao del Sur
  • Camarines Norte
  • Zamboanga Sibugay
  • Albay and
  • Romblon

The conclusion being: “Good performance is not sufficient for the governor to win; neither is bad performance sufficient for a governor to lose”, according to an NTCSB official.

So, how should the Noynoy’s camp approach this? If you ask me, it’s simple really, let me try. Fine, leave good governance campaign line since that’s been bought already. Counter the ads with the same number of minutes. That is if his campaign funds can match that of Villar and if he is able to buy that much airtime. Why? It might be possible that available airtime has already been bought and blocked out and that TV and radio might not be allowed to bump off those commercials. If he can no longer buy air-time because that has been blocked out, then go on a road campaign. Will that work? Sure! Bring out Kris! Darn it!

But seriously and very importantly, like this write up by Philip Tubeza, “Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III will have to define what he is “running for,” and not just what he is “running against”. The “Noynoy Aquino” who will not steal has already been bought. In other words, he has to go far beyond that message and start feeling the people.

I maybe disappointed with the numbers, but I believe Noynoy Aquino is still the best amongst the presidentiables and this is certainly his to lose if he doesn’t start feeling the “feeling”.

Borrowing Bill Clinton’s popular election mantra: for me, “It’s the C5 anomaly, stupid!“. Here it is again as explained very simply by Winnie Monsod.

Nope… Obvious that RP voters are averse to good governance. They like poor, wicked, crooked, corrupt, abusive governance.

Noynoy Aquino’s campaign reminds me of Hillary’s campaign. When Hillary started, she was way up there on top, unbeatable. While Obama continued on with this message. It was too late in the game for the Hillary campaign to fire her campaign manager and change strategies. She and her campaign were just too over-confident.

This is what I am seeing from the Noynoy campaign. No offense to Butch Abad and his team, but they definitely cannot just sit and be comfortable that Noynoy maintains the lead. They cannot let that ratings overtook them and realize they were left by the train.

That’s what happened to Hillary. Not even the magic of Bill could resuscitate that campaign.

I think it is even simpler than that Mr reynz. I mean, really.

People do not want to change because those candidates who make a pitch for the highest office in the land fail to provide a clear roadmap for change. They do not articulate in categorical terms how they envision the Philippines of 2016, nor do they take strong positions on relevant issues that impact our ability to change to begin with.

How then does one even begin to expect Filipinos’ lazy arses to move in the right direction when no such direction is even discussed or debated to begin with.

It is indeed quite simple folks:

    Filipinos deserve their government.

    - and -

Filipino leaders reflect the character of their constituents.

There is no infinite regress in blame to step back to here. Ultimately three fingers point back to the average Pinoy schmoe whenever they persume to judge their leaders with their pretensious “morality”. :D

Villar is everywhere sa atin… well, except sa Senate where he only appeared on a cameo role para lang “di pwedeng i-interpelate” on the C5 scandal.

When I arrived on late December for a vacation eh every break yata ng TV show sa atin may ad si villar, kahit anak ko na 2yo eh kabisado na yung jingle. Noynoy’s came out mga latter part of January na.

No wonder. Filipinos really need to wake up kung pano talaga bumoto.

Trapong trapo.

  • Juan A. Change says:

I think the Supreme Court has to do with this. Their ruling on premature campaigning was wrong, and favored those with money.
Whereas the very reason for the law is precisely to prevent it.

Kesyo, di pa raw kandidato or di pa campaign period, so di pa pwedeng maging bawal yung sobrang advertisement. How can the Supreme Court be so S_ _ _ _ _?!

  • Fauxx says:

    Congratulations, Mr. Reynz!

I think this blog partly helped the rise of Villar’s rating in the surveys. Through this blog, mas nalinawan ang mga tao sa personality at credentials ni Noynoy.

Thanks from the bottom of my heart. Knowledge really is power.

  • [...] Of course, I was disappointed but still hopeful that he will come out on top eventually. True, in my previous blog entry, I partly blamed his campaign staff for sort of following the Hillary campaign travails but I am [...]

  • noypi says:

Kahit sinong kandidato ok lang manalo wag lang si villar dahil sa laki ng nagastos nyan panigurado ganun din kalaki ang kukurakutin nyan
